Atlas Shrugged Pt. 1 opens to just under $1.7M on 300 US Screens
From: Friday Report: 'Rio' Takes First, 'Scream 4' Gets Few Calls

Meanwhile, Atlas Shrugged: Part I generated $683,000 at 300 locations. That was a modest start for the adaptation of the first third of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, particularly considering the media hype it received for its topicality and "Tea Party" appeal.

4. Unsurprisingly, the Rand fans were all out to see it
They will claim victory if all three parts get made. Not to spoil the ending, but all three parts will get made.

11. The trick is to make it look like

the free market supported making parts 2 and 3 from the success of part 1.

3. One million, six hundred and eighty three thousand dollars and 00/00
I think that fairly translates to just under $1.7M. Note that these are the weekend estimates (and they are ususally close); the "actuals" are generaly releases Monday afternoon.

5. Well ... In all fairness
the OP is unclear and ambiguous .... The request for clarification is justified ...

8. See the apology to the poster below
I returned to the link, and they've actually pulled that paragraph from the story, i I assume they are correcting.

6. Your OP omits the million part. It just reads "$683,000."

7. I apologize. I simply coppied the text from BOM
I did say to look at the chart for the financials, but your point is well taken.

9. And to further clarify......
Apparantly the figure in the text that I copied was the Friday opening figure; not the figure for the whole weekend.

12. Just like most RW nutjob movies
It will do well on the first weekend because every mouth breathing asshole that lives on AM radio has been told to go and see it by the gods on the magic boxes. They don't bother with shit like reviews or research "The all knowing voice said we must go and see this film Ginni so off we go now".

Wait until next weekend and watch for the 60% drop in revenue. This handy technique of opening on a few screens might help them a bit but even most mouth breathing assholes eventually hear from others that the thing is shit so they may be willing to commit heresy and not do what the magic box says.

Anyone remember "American Carol"? It was supposed to be the great start of New Conservative Cinema. The only problem was that, like Atlas Shrugged, it was so fucking bad that not even conservatives were willing to spend money on it. Estimates give it a world-wide return of about 7M on a budget of about 22M. Atlas Shrugged was done on the cheap but I'm not sure if they'll be able to get funding for parts 2 and 3?

14. I think they will
There are enough Rand fans with money to scratch up another $20M (estimated budget for Pt. 1 was +/- $10M, so I'm figuring the budget stays flat). My guess is that this effort will about break even, so those fronting the cash won't fear losing too much.

17. They might
it will take a really big infusion of straight up political cash but there seems to be an unending pile of that shit around.

15. The KFM, really??
The KFM is brilliant. Say what you will about Abrams/Abrams/Zucker's politics, but that movie is hilarious.
