A good editorial on military medical. I was a financial analyst on the initial TRICARE for Southern California back in 1995, so I saw the baby born.
The military medical was contracted out under Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney. The first contractor was Aetna, then Foundation; at that time it had become a retirement plan for the Department of Defense health affair officers. At Region 9, the contractor’s economist was married to the Region 9 economist, so the entire pricing/costing analysis was under a cloud, which I reported to the DOD’s inspector general, who contacted me two years later for the data.
The veterans are preferentially hired by the federal government, and may convert their military retirement to FERS to increase their pensions. The spouses of the military do not have to wait for retirement, because they are preferentially hired by the federal government. Spouses do not participate in insurance groups either, as they and their many children are covered under TRICARE.
The military and their spouses and all children are covered under TRICARE.
Cheney created even more military contractors, the medical field, for his friends. The public does not realize that even the medical care is contracted out and that is why the costs are skyrocketing.
