Brazil Stadium Turns Pink - (homophobic chants shock community)
Edited on Mon Apr-18-11 12:54 AM by pinto
What a great story about the response from fans and the volleyball athlete's team mates alike. ~ pinto

(Volleywood) A few days ago during the Superliga semifinal match between Sada Cruzeiro & Vôlei Futuro, Sada Cruzeiro fans chanted homophobic slurs towards Michael, a middle blocker from Team Vôlei Futuro. The fans kept screaming “Bicha! Bicha! Bicha!” which means “faggot” in English.

A week has passed after the incident that forced Michael to out himself publicly, and Volleywood reports that the outpouring of support for Michael has been tremendous. The brazenness of the crowd’s bigotry seems to have surprised a lot of people and called them to action.

At the second semi-final match on last Saturday, the team wore pink warmup shirts to show support, and the team’s libero (designated defense player) wore a rainbow jersey during the match.

"Vôlei Futuro Against Prejudice…"

Then the crowd used thundersticks emblazoned with Michael’s name to turn the stadium pink!

9. The Nazis attacked gays.
And unions, Jews and racial minorities. It's a symptom. Be on guard. Fascism requires scapegoats.

The American fascists have focused on Muslims and illegal aliens in addition to their traditional scapegoats -organized labor, gays, socialists and communists. Might as well throw climate scientists in there too.

16. While they have their share of homophobes, Brazil seems to be more evolved on this matter.
I wonder why that is? Could it be our politicians - Democratic and Republicans - pandering to religious bigots?

I'm reminded of this statement from Glen Greenwald:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Greenwald
In a May 2008 interview, Greenwald explained that "even though Brazil has the largest Catholic population of any country in the world" and "was a military dictatorship until 1985": "I’m able to obtain from the Brazilian government a permanent visa because my Brazilian partner's government recognizes our relationship for immigration purposes, while the government of my supposedly 'free,' liberty-loving country enacted a law explicitly barring such recognition."

38. Oh, hi -- I was going to post a little story re Brazil...
that I had read in the NY Times probably 20 years ago -- AIDS era --

And, at least at that time, it was a Catholic country --

The report indicated that Brazilian doctors were shocked to find that

so many females in marriages -- who claimed to have had no other sexual

contact than with their husbands -- were showing up HIV positive!!

Subsequently, the doctors came to realize that something like 30% of

married males in Brazil also loved other males!

I thought then and still now that the story was a perfect example of

authority's need to keep us all ignorant!!

And I think that story perhaps woke up a lot of people in NY City that day!!

:)

39. 30% is absolutely certainly an exaggeration.
But there's a lot of closet cases like that here. You know the type, men who think they're "not gay" because they "don't give their buttholes", they just "like to fuck gays".

40. Well, guess we have to go to the Kinsey Chart on that one ....
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 12:58 AM by defendandprotect
What did he predict would be the rate for BISEXUALITY?

Which, btw, seems to be the next taboo subject in America!!

Explains a lot though!!

Here's the Kinsey Scale --

Table of the scaleThe scale is as follows:

Rating Description
0 Exclusively heterosexual
1 Predominantly heterosexual, only incidentally homosexual
2 Predominantly heterosexual, but more than incidentally homosexual
3 Equally heterosexual and homosexual.
4 Predominantly homosexual, but more than incidentally heterosexual
5 Predominantly homosexual, only incidentally heterosexual

6 Exclusively homosexual

31. Awful showing by the crowd that chanted "bicha."
That being said, from the concrete, grows a rose. Great show of support and solidarity from the home crowd and the teammates of Michael.
