My first reaction is here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x907744 And then I was sort of coming around to his "Progressive" side, but this new item by Gawker confirms my original take on what the dude is in for. The Rethugs will have it all ways: They get to have an issue to bash a Hispanic with without needing to tap into their inherent racism; they can label him either as disloyal to his Commander-in-Shrub OR gutless OR stupid for "not knowing" what was going on; and they get to paint Dems as desperate losers.
The whole campaign, if he isn’t forced to quit, will be endless rehashing of Abu Grahib. It doesn’t help that much for him to say that he KNEW NOTHING about what was going on. Already, DUers have said, “(even if he was cleared of responsibility) Do we want somebody (in a top position) who doesn’t know what’s going on?”
So here’s Gawker, a gossip website that does lots of political satire like Jon STEWART, COLBERT, and MAHER, making even Ben BARNES’s quote look stupid. They call him “Abu Grahib OVERLORD.” Oh, plus pics of Abu Grahib. Nice.
I ask again, how clueless are our Dem leaders (Ben BARNES and Patty MURRAY). Not a real question.

Retired Abu Ghraib Overlord Confirms Senate Run
Jeff Neumann — Democrats in Texas seem to be excited about this: They've convinced retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq during the Abu Ghraib torture scandal, to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchison. Sanchez described himself to McClatchy over the phone, saying, "I decided that socially, I'm a progressive, a fiscal conservative and a strong supporter, obviously, of national defense." He added that, "America has a responsibility to its people."
Sanchez was cleared of direct involvement in prisoner abuse by Army investigators. However, the widespread torture of Iraqi prisoners still happened on his watch and he had approved harsh "interrogation techniques" that were described by investigators as "sadistic, blatant and wanton criminal abuse." When asked about Sanchez, Former Texas Lt. Governor Ben Barnes told McClatchy, "He's got a very compelling story." Yeah, you could say that.
