Another instance of the Reich-wing playing hardball
Republicans challenge Carl Lewis' NJ residency

Republicans are challenging Carl Lewis' residency as he runs for the state Senate.

They say the nine-time Olympic medalist hasn't lived in New Jersey for the required four years. They say he has lived and voted in California until recently.

Lewis says he owns two homes in New Jersey, including one in Medford that was purchased in 2005.

The former track star says he transferred his voter registration last Monday, the same day he officially declared his candidacy as a Democrat in the state's 8th District.

The 49-year-old political novice grew up in Willingboro, N.J.

1. I disagree -- even if they are wrong, they are reasonable here.
If NJ law requires a four-year residency to run for state Senate, and on its face it looks like Lewis hasn't met that requirement, then further inquiry is warranted. I think if one hasn't physically resided in the state for the last four years, the burden should be on him to prove he has not abandoned his residency.

3. Well, I won't profess to have your level of knowledge, I just read the link.
The article you linked appears to indicate that NJ has a four-year residency requirement to run for state Senate, and that for much of the last four years Mr. Lewis has physically resided and voted in a different state. One hardly needs to be a NJ resident to see that Mr. Lewis may not qualify as a four-year resident for election purposes, and if this is the case he does not properly belong on the ballot.

Possibly when he produces other evidence such as tax returns, he will be found to fall within the requirements; but asking him to conform to the plain law is not what I would consider hardball.

Glad you agree with the Republicans....

Court Slaps Feds Again For Christie-Era NJ Prosecutions

In a major setback for the U.S. Justice Department, a federal appeals court last week dismissed federal bribery and conspiracy charges against two New Jersey Democrats targeted in a trap set by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

More generally, the ongoing court battles over the prosecutions that Christie, below left, launched as his state’s U.S. Attorney could hurt his image as a rising national political star within Republican ranks and as a cost-cutting corruption-fighter. Beyond that, the Justice Department’s policies are national in scope and raise intriguing issues about how government can best fight corruption without wasting taxpayer money and violating civil rights.

But it's too late for those folks to get their reputations back.

6. Oh just stop the "Glad you agree with the Republicans" insult
No one is siding with Republicans-they are siding with the rules.

The fact that Republicans are following the rules as well (yeah, I am shocked!) does not make the rules wrong.

7. HAHAHAHAHA
meh, meh and meh

The Pukes in this State are working behind the scene to undermine every Democrat elected over the past 8 years to any office, and if you think this one little incident is 'playing by the rules" wonderful, I'm not on DU anymore. I'm on Puke world.

Bletch.

8. I understand
you're looking for justification for being rude and acting condescendingly.

I hope that works for you.

4. I am with you on this one. If he is a valid candidate he should win this easily
and if he isn't he shouldn't be able to run.
