Top surgeon forced to resign over semen

A top surgeon has been forced to quit his post over comments he wrote about semen and its effect on the health, happiness and well-being of women.

Dr. Lazar Greenfield resigned from his position as the president-elect of the American College of Surgeons following a Valentine’s day editorial he wrote citing research which found that women who had unprotected sex were less depressed than women who used condoms, arguing semen was the factor which made the difference.

In the article he explained that research has found mood enhancers like estrone, cortisol, prolactin, oxytocin, serotonin, and melatonin are presence in semen – all of which can be attributed to combating depression.

The editorial said, “Female college students having unprotected sex were significantly less depressed than were those whose partners used condoms (Arch. Sex. Behav. 2002;31:289-93). Their better moods were not just a feature of promiscuity, because women using condoms were just as depressed as those practicing total abstinence. The benefits of semen contact also were seen in fewer suicide attempts and better performance on cognition tests. So there's a deeper bond between men and women than St. Valentine would have suspected, and now we know there's a better gift for that day than chocolates.”

she is less likely to develop pre-eclampsia whilst being pregnant.

Although, it's not just swallowing, it's also unprotected sex. And really, if you're going to have a child with someone, you should probably be at that stage in your relationship to have unprotected sex for a while.

You never know when they'll sleep around on you, but it is a confidence builder.

29. One obvious problem with the "study"

The subjects were self-selected. Potentially the women having the unprotected sex may have been having it because they were in long-term relationships and somewhat happy. The women using condoms may not have been in relationships. I'd also question the entire role of semen without a breakdown beyond condoms used/not used...did the "protected" ones never perform oral sex without a condom?
So many things seem really wrong about this.

Assuming for a moment that his basic correlation is correct--that women having unprotected sex are happier than those having protected sex--he still hasn't proven causation, specifically that the sex itself is responsible for the difference in happiness. College age women having unprotected sex are most likely doing so with a committed boyfriend, whereas protected sex is usually found in either non-relationship or uncommitted partners. And you don't have to be a scientist to know that someone who has a healthy long-term relationship is often happier and less stressed than people who don't.

No, I'm not insulting single people here. I am one. But I'd be lying if I said that humans don't have an innate attraction to relationships, and that relationships usually make people happy.
