This guy was a little nutty in later life. He endorsed Bush for president. He was hard on Democrats (of which he was a lifelong party member).

But he wrote the manual on how to move a decaying American city forward. He had abandoned houses condemned and sold to all comes for $1, so long as you promised to make it habitable and occupy it within 18 months. Some of those houses are now worth millions, even in today's market.

He created the urban festival marketplace in partnership with Jim Rouse (google him).

He created the National Aquarium, still going strong all these years later.

He converted a sewage infested estuary and created a downtown center that is the rival or any.

On balance, he was a good guy.

edit. I am embarrassed to say I forgot to mention his name.

3. Thanks for the post
I lived in Maryland when Schaefer was governor, but since I now live in CA, I might not have known about his death without your post.

4. Thanks for the update, Stinky. He was still State Comptroller (I think that was what it was)
when I came to Maryland a few years back. Didn't realize that he had worked with Jim Rouse. One of my Dad's college buddies knew and worked with Rouse back when Rouse was planning Columbia.

BTW, I believe Rouse's ex-wife who was very active in the community just passed away within the past couple of months. She was in her mid 90's, I think.

5. Ah yes, Mayor Annoyed. (Pronounced Maranoid)
Don Schaefer as he was known to everybody. A friend and coworker from Balto cussed him at every opportunity. Yet when living in Baltimore, she voted for him at every opportunity.

"He was a helluva mayor." her quote.
