Could you register to vote in Kansas?
According to Rachel Maddow, If a proposed bill becomes law, you will have to produce either a passport or birth certificate to register to vote for the first time. Can you say, "voter suppression?"

2. Yes, it would.
Trouble is, it isn't that simple for everyone. And we all know the real purpose behind the proposal.

5. The main issue is that all of those things take time to get.
Therefore, anyone who hasn't taken care of it WELL before the election doesn't get to vote. And all those young voters will hear in response when they go to the polls in explanation will be an Ana Kasparianesque "Sorry."

7. I could; but that's not really the issue, is it?
It's about those who can't produce those documents and/or the "undue burden" of requiring them to produce them. And, about what part of the population that impacts more.

Sorry, Brigid, I'm sure you knew all this already. I was just "typing aloud." :)

18. Would the new law invalidate current voters
if they originally registered with another type of documentation or ID?

I didn't hear any comment on if this would change the status of currently registered voters.

If not, there needs to be a new and robust voter registration drive started right away. Get people registered NOW. This could be an advertising tool for motivating people to register before it becomes much more difficult and costly to do so.

Costly in the amount of time it would take, and the fees it might cost to get copies of birth certificates, and certainly for the price of a passport.

Kansans, protect your voting rights today!

(before your elected lawmakers make it much harder to exercise them later.)
