Big Hollywood (Breitbart) blogger: "In Defense of 'Glee'" (cultural conservatives dislike it)
Hmm. from an RSS tracker of Google News stories mentioning Conservapedia, it picked up a comment mentioning CP on this Big Hollywood (an Andrew Breitbart website). Ashley Sewell (txtrendychick.com), who was an official CPAC blogger, had this to say to defend a show that's attracted ire for cultural conservatives (y'know, the types who'd lead the "Satanic Panic" regarding 1960s rock music and Harry Potter and who blame the media for the downfall of society) because it chooses to entertain rather than teach teens to be good ol' boys and girls who obey the Bible and traditional values, and especially because of a gay character in the show.

There are some on the Right in this country that would do well with a lesson in accepting the gay community and “Glee” is just the teacher for them. After all, what’s more wholesome than teenagers exploring their emotions through something as harmless as song and dance? Never mind they devoted a whole episode to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Kurt Hummel is arguably the most lovable, well-developed character in the cast and Chris Colfer rightfully earned himself a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the bullied gay teen. Fans everywhere have pulled for Kurt from day one and for reasons totally outside of his sexual orientation; whether it’s cultivating a relationship with his father, standing up to homophobic bully Karofsky, or hitting that high F in “Defying Gravity’s” wicked aria (no pun intended – okay, maybe just a little one) we’ve wanted him to thrive. Yup, everyone was on the Kurt Train until he and Blaine sucked face. Then lots of conservative audience members located their nearest exit noting it may be behind them and jumped right off, without even waiting for a slow down.

There are right and wrong ways to spread tolerance and the in-your-face approach is certainly one of the latter. Sure, there are times the Shock & Awe approach works: walking a philanthropist through a shantytown, starving children on television commercials asking for a sponsor, seeing dramatic pictures of an earthquake-ravaged country. Have you noticed a pattern here? This method works best with charity and I’ll be the first to tell you that the gay community doesn’t want your charity, thank you very much. They just want some R-E-S-P-E-C-T. <<Insert snap and head-bob here>>

Believe it or not, there is more to being gay than one’s sexuality and just because someone is gay doesn’t mean the only issue they are concerned about is gay marriage.

Any internet user (registered or not on Breitbart.com) can vote up or down on comments - so I thumbed down the comments that I thought to be homophobic/religious apologetic and thumbed up the more liberal comments (hee hee but that's the consequence of the comments section setup). Most of the comments of course paralleled the conservative boycott of CPAC after GOProud decided to participate especially regarding Sewell's comment "Believe it or not, there is more to being gay than one’s sexuality and just because someone is gay doesn’t mean the only issue they are concerned about is gay marriage." as many in the community advocated a heteronormative, "tolerance does not mean acceptance" viewpoint of homosexuality. Another comment claimed that there was an agenda in the show to change public attitude into "accepting homosexuality as equally legitimate with heterosexuality."

An interesting dissent from the establishment that article was, and the reaction on the Breitbart.com comments sure shows the split between real science (people don't choose their sexual orientation) and conservatives (homosexuality is wrong, and people choose it).

1. Did anyone ever complain about all the hetro
kissing and making out? There was even a whole episode on how to prolong make-out sessions by thinking of the coach...
