When You Cancel Your Magazine Subscription on Your Kindle, Your Back Issues Disappear Too
When You Cancel Your Magazine Subscription on Your Kindle, Your Back Issues Disappear Too

Consider this to be your dismaying PSA of the day: Apparently, if you're a Kindle owner with a magazine subscription, and you decide to stop subscribing, the back issues you previously downloaded are also lost—for good.

That's right—there is no way to retrieve what you already paid for and supposedly, already own. To top it all off, there is also no existing way to transfer old issues of your subscription to a new device before you cancel.

So it looks like if you chose a digital subscription for The New Yorker over its print version, you're pretty much stuck continuing the service—unless, of course, you're willing to lose your entire collection; both future and past issues.

1. Your paying for access to their database
so your not actually paying for the back issues.

2. Saving a tree can be a hardship
I've gone back to some paper bills recently - too much requirement for non-website copies or originals.
That's bad to hear and needs to be fixed ASAP!
Thanks for the heads up.

3. Could you have got that Magazine Subscription in hard copy?
My kids all own Kindles and I would like to make sure they are aware of their options. Thanks

4. This does not surprise me, per se,
but isn't too swift either.

I'll stick to paper and continue to recycle for the time being. I can't send someone a snippet of a Kindle.

5. Makes me glad to know there are hackers out there who gladly torrent this DRM shit.
Not that I'd ever buy a Kindle to begin with....

8. That seems odd to me. But, I recycle all my old back issues
of everything I subscribe too, so I don't guess it would bother me that much.

My Kindle has nothing on it except what I've downloaded from the Gutenberg Project. I didn't buy it to read new stuff, but to be able to access old stuff that I can't get in any other way.

Right now, I'm reading an 1880's book on gold mining. Fascinating. Hard to obtain in paper form, and expensive. Free on Gutenberg. For new stuff, there's the library.

The cool thing is that Amazon's business model for the Kindle is to make money selling the content for it. I love it that it was so inexpensive because of that. Bwahaha!

12. Just as I was starting to get intrigued by Kindle, I looked at the prices
Sometimes the price of the Kindle version is MORE than the price of a brand new paperback or even hardcover. They are totally trying to get over now. No thanks!

13. I either borrow it from the libary or buy it used
many books can be purchased used online for 0.01 plus $4 shipping; that beats the Kindle price by far.
