Approximately 30,000 We Energies customers have received notices that their utilities will be shut off for failure to pay, and that's sent customers scrambling to try to get energy assistance at various agencies.
On Monday the state moratorium on utility shutoffs ended, so crews from We Energies started disconnecting customers and several hundred will be turned off each day, Brian Manthey, a spokesman for We Energies, said Tuesday.
At Community Advocates, 728 N. James Lovell Drive, more than 100 people were lined up at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in hopes of applying for energy assistance and to try to work out a plan to keep their utilities on, said executive director Joe Volk.
