"The Golden Arches are offering golden opportunities." - local teevee news reporter |
|
So McDonalds is hiring 50,000 people nationwide. That's an average of four per store.
And the pay starts at $8.00/hr.
That would be $16,640/yr. if the successful applicants work 52 consecutive 40hr. weeks.
Golden opportunities, my ass.

5. Why is it bad that McD's has jobs? |
|
The bitching about McD's hiring people is idiotic.
The fact that we want to create better, long term careers, does not make these jobs any better, or worse.
Some people who could use the money are going to get jobs.
Oh the HORROR.
Clearly these people (and the rest of us) were all better off yesterday, when those folks did not have these jobs.

But the panic about it is interesting.
I mean, would these same folks be flipping out if McD's was laying off people? I suspect yes.
I find that every time we get good jobs numbers, we have folks screaming that the new jobs probably suck. Even if we assume that is true (which I don't) aren't new jobs better than no jobs? Or job loses?
My point is that any time there is a job gain, there is screaming about why it sucks.

8. We need to get away from dependence on large corporations. |
|
All of them exist to funnel money up to a very limited number of people. This model will never sustain healthy employment levels or provide good middle class wages.
Support locally owned restaurants and local food suppliers, instead.

13. Sounds like you're agreeing that these are "golden opportunities" |

The bitching in the OP was due to those words.

15. Oh brother ... that's what it takes to piss folks off? |
|
the golden arches has "golden opportunities".
I guess McD's should have said, "we have some shitty jobs that no body wants, so come get one".
I get the sense that some folks are just pissed off all the time. About 50k people are going to get jobs. Oh the horror.
Or what, people here are waiting for C-level positions to be offered to everyone?

wonder just what the impact of doubling minimum wage would be on our economy....
just thinking.
prices would go up, but then so would those salaries. And the prices would go up only on things that currently require lots of cheap labor.
I'm thinking it'd be good.
Of course, I'm also in favor of tariffs that re-price imports based on the minimum wages of the country that they're imported from. E.g. raise prices on goods from China to negate any advantage they have due to their cheap labor.

Just enough to guarantee you can't hunt for REAL work....just enough to make sure you can't collect any unemployment benefits...
...not enough to do jack shit on.
No, 'a job' is not ~always~ better than no job at all.
