Powder to remove radiation developed

Whiter than white: This powder developed by a Japanese chemist and an Akita-based company can capture and precipitate radioactive substances in water, including iodine, cesium and strontium.

Kyodo

A chemist and a domestic company have jointly developed a powder that can capture and precipitate radioactive substances in water and that could be used in the ongoing effort to deal with contaminated water at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant, the chemist said Tuesday.

The powder, made of various chemicals and minerals, including zeolite, can remove radioactive substances such as iodine, cesium and strontium, according to Tomihisa Ota, a professor at Kanazawa University who developed it with Kumaken Kougyou Co., a pollution cleanup company in Akita Prefecture.

15. Corexit is a known dangerous substance.
This Japan powder has yet to be tested.
But sounds like a start, assuming it does not develop any negative effects.
At least people are working on alternatives to storing leaking mountains of radioactive waste for the next million years.

12. Okay, the question still stands

The powder takes out the radiation and then what do you do with the radiated powder, which would not be powder any more because it would be dissolved??

Unless I am missing something.......

13. The power itself can be dealt with as any other radioactive waste.
The water is now much safer to deal with. It is just simple chemistry being applied to solve a problem.

14. Good question.
There was a guy who has proven that certain species of mushrooms actually break down radioactive materials.
Takes a long time, but can be done.

So if the powder would be efficient to use and produce, then mixed with the mushroom stuff and allowed to compost in a safe container of sorts...????

11. Right. Say you spread this in the ocean
It would precipitate the harmful elements to the bottom, concentrating it around the shorelines for DECADES.

It might be fine for purifying potable water, though.

16. There's a far easier way of removing the nucleotides from contaminated water.
Assuming, as he apparently does, that it's a set volume of water in a container.

Just let it evaporate and then scrap the salts that remain into a cask.

This stuff isn't good for things like the ocean or where there's running water. It might be good for drinking water, but probably not. And it's certainly not good for large-scale use.
