14. From my experience, the trolls hit swiftly and en masse
You registered your complaint about unrecs a scant four minutes into the thread, yet the trolls had already plunged the thread 'underwater.' As of my post, over an hour later, it's +28. Good DOES prevail!

7. This area needs this, and so much more. A drop in the bucket
but I hope it will bring other jobs with it. The need for jobs is so great, and has been for too many decades.

The only good thing in this area is that the Great Recession didn't hit us so hard....we never had economic prosperity with the rest of the country.

9. It should bring other jobs
jobs follow jobs. Construction jobs for the plant that will help local hotels, restaurants, etc. Employees at the plant who can spend on housing, food, insurance, banking, autos.... the list goes on. It trickles through the economy. Great news for Youngstown.

8. The pipe mill was built there to exploit the Marcellus Shale, and that means fracking
The last I heard was the fracking causes radioactive radon gas to migrate to our homes. Radon causes 20,000 deaths/year due to lung cancer.

Second, this plant could be offshore and the local workers are fucked, as is Youngstown. And PLEASE don't tell me your source is Gasland.

13. Fracking does cause lots of problems, but this is a new one to me.
Water issues are the most serious that I have seen so far. And in this area, radon migrates into homes even without fracking.

Yes, you are right that this mill will exploit fracking in the Marcellus and Utica Shales, but fighting the mill is not the answer to controlling the drilling. V&M Star is here because of the drilling activity, but they are not the drillers and they are not the ones doing the damage. What we need to do it fight the drilling wars by fighting for regulation and taxes, because they will NOT go away from this gas field.

17. You cannot kill the drilling, even if that is your only purpose in life.
It will happen. And V&M is safe. As long as there is gas to be had.

I would personally like to kill the drilling, because I believe that it is worse than what we had before they came. But I am practical, and I know it is here for a long time. I work on minimizing the effects that are left behind.

19. No, not coal. I am talking about the scraping by, but at least
a much cleaner place to live. I do not want to worry about the water I drink or bathe in.

20. Fracking here in SW PA
is at a depth of over 7000 feet. Far below the aquifer. How do you define scraping by? What industry do you work in?

22. Yes, the gas is found very deep in the earth.
But that is not where the problems with water will come from. There are a few issues that are known problems at this point. First is the tremendous amount of water required for each well drilled, and that water is being taken from our streams and rivers. There is also the problem with what to do with the waste water that blows back out of the well during the fracking process, and this water is full of chemicals. Another issue is whether or not the drillers are doing a proper job during the drilling process to protect the aquifers. Yes, the gas is deep, but the drilling goes through that aquifer on its way down, and if the casing is not sealed properly, that aquifer can be contaminated when the pressure is applied to force the water deep into the shale (remember the Gulf oil spill, caused in part by faulty casing). These are just the problems that I can see at this point.

Scraping by...having a job that barely pays the bills, but somehow the bills get paid if you don't indulge in too many wants and cover the needs. Most people I know have been working, it just is not the same as when the steel mills were booming. I work in the trucking industry, although I am not sure what your point is on this. If you are intending to tell me that all industries will be booming because of the drilling, you are partially right. But I am sorry, I would rather be alive and healthy than to be making tons of money just to get ill and die early.

23. So, making pipe for the purpose of polluting our water through fracking
is something we should all cheer?

It is a sad day when the only jobs around are in support of the destruction of our planet and clean water. Remember natural gas fracking is what causes tap water to burn.

30. Here is a link
from Scientific American that has much more information regarding fracking and water safety issues.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=drill-for-natural-gas-pollute-water

Just because one case is presumably not from drilling, as in your link, does not mean that the process is safe.

I cannot even believe that you are so pro-drilling that you would be willing to sacrifice safe water just for drilling. I have always felt that, when in doubt, it is better to proceed with caution and learn/study more before going hog wild with a new idea or technology. This gas will not go away, and we should feel confident in the process before we become the guinea pigs. Years down the road, when we find that this was not a safe procedure, it will be too late.

31. I would really like to have seen tests on this well water
prior to any drilling in the area. In fact, I would like to see these results prior to activity all the time. After the fact, I am always hearing that this is normal and was always in the water. I wonder. It seems a bit suspicious to me that the problems with the water occur after drilling has started. We need more info.
