What if we tried to give Pres. Obama the same powers Gov. Snyder now has
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 08:14 PM by Motown_Johnny
The ability to declare "financial martial law" and send in someone to dissolve a local government and act as a virtual dictator.

That way he could just send someone into New Jersey to kick out Christie, or into Florida to kick out Scott.

Wouldn't it be fun to hear that debate?

*Context is Rachel's piece on Benton Harbor*

2. I'd love to see that! I'd feel VERY comfortable if he had that authority. Unfortunately,
it wouldn't QUITE be America any longer. :(

12. I would feel VERY uncomfortable, in fact downright disgusted
for ANYONE to have that power.

3. Where ARE the people of Michigan?
I see there's some kind of rally later this week. But why aren't they on the streets NOW?

I tell you, Canadians wouldn't take this kind of abuse of the democratic process lying down.

Michiganders! Get OFF your comfortable couches!

9. We can't start collecting signatures for Snyder's recall until July 1st
so until then all we can do is bitch and moan

There have been protests, another one in Benton Harbor tomorrow, but if they ignore us they have little effect.

19. From what I read...
the signatures can be collected before July 1. They just can't be submitted until then:

"The group says on its website it plans to begin collecting voter signatures as early as next month if the wording on its petition is approved. The group says it will need about 807,000 valid signatures to make the ballot in November. "

13. It's too fricking cold
and we lost too many people in the Greater Depression to have any idle hands.

14. We have been protesting. Doesn't mean it's in the media.
We've had organized protests, we had letter/e-mail campaigns, and the governor even got protested when he spoke as his high school alma mater. It doesn't do a damn thing.

Also, for those of us with jobs, we have to be careful--not many jobs out there anymore in our state.

I certainly hope someone is planning to challenge this law on Constitutional grounds.

10. That is kinda my point. If POTUS had these powers it would be considered
the end of the world as we know it

But Snyder having these powers is just business as usual

11. If the POTUS was one of them, like Jeb Bush or
Michele Bachmann, it would be all right. Obama, no. They would scream to the highest mountain if Obama even tried.

15. No one's fought it yet.
Not that I've heard of, anyway. That was my reaction, and when I wrote my state senator (R), I brought that up only for him to reply that it was okay because the state senate can impeach the managers who've proven themselves to be incompetent. Seriously.

16. This can't be constitutional.
I don't know about MI's Constitution, but surely the U.S Supreme Court would strike it down if it came before them.

The five corporate fascists on the court have their orders.
