Rachel Maddow Segment on Michigan: To Michigan DUers
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 08:21 PM by vaberella
Rachel is not asking this. I am asking the following because I'm curious.

What is being done to counter act the actions of the Governor by the citizenry? We know in Wisconsin, these sorts of actions has galvanized the citizenry to counter act the Governor and his recount is imminent.

But what is being done in Michigan? I haven't heard much mobilization and or a recall of the man. Because this is out of control.

3. We can't start collecting signatures for Snyder's recall until July 1st
so right now it is in an organizing phase.

I was at that rally in Lansing that you just saw some video of on Rachel's show. There were booths set up at every major entrance point where you were asked to sign in and give contact information, in preparation for the recall drive.

I was carrying a sign, one side said to "Reclaim Michigan Recall Snyder" and I had a number of strangers come and ask me about how to recall him (luckily I had looked into it prior to this event).

So, at this point there are just protests and organizing but starting July 1st we start working on the recall.

state to allow the electorate/citizens act immediately to recall/terminate terms in "certain circumstances and as a matter of last resort and measured by the gravity of the situation". I think at the very least I have learned that much from watching all of this.

5. I subscribe to a facebook page:Working Michigan.
They are collecting signatures on petitions to send to legislators, spreading the word about protests, etc. The MEA is working and lobbying on many issues and their website, MEA.org is helpful. The ACLU in Michigan is working on a FOIA request regarding the EMF manager bills. I write my congressmen and the Governor about weekly and I have been to Lansing to protest and will be going in the next week. We have a Republican Governor, House, and Senate. Basically there is no stopping them. I will not give up hope, but our real chance will not come until the next election.

13. Thank you so much.
Do you know of any up and coming progressive people who are running for public office in the coming years? I'm creating a site where we can push the progressive agenda to give Obama some back up in Congress. Or at least make the progressive flank stronger and with a louder voice. Please let me know.

9. The petition to recall Snyder was filed yesterday (Monday)
This is from a thread posted Sunday in the Michigan forum.

We have it

We have it. Michigan Citizens United will file a petition to Recall Governor Snyder with the State on Monday morning around 10am. This is the first step in the process and make no mistake, it's just the beginning. Once the petition is reviewed and the wording is approved, we can start to collect signatures. We plan to start collecting signatures on May 8th.

- snip -

Of course we also need more in terms of donations and humbly ask that you give what you can so that we can continue doing the work. The estimated cost of this campaign is $250 000. We're a long way from that.

To some up the requirements from here on in:

* We need 807 000 valid signatures to get the recall on the ballot this November. Due to about 20% of them standing a chance of being thrown out, we're aiming for at least 1.1 Million.
* The process for approval of the petition will take around 20 days. So we're aiming for May 8th as a starting date for collecting signatures.

11. There are groups scrambling to organize a resistance
Edited on Tue Apr-19-11 09:21 PM by jimlup
I was heartened by a rally in Ann Arbor a couple of weeks ago. I think people in Michigan are somewhat taken by surprise. Not the activists and union loyalists but the naive populace totally bought the Rick Snyder is the hero coming to rescue us meme. They are slowly awakening.

I've been meaning to post them but got busy. Yes, we are getting organized. Our hats are off to Wisconsin. I expect that Benton Harbor will be the site of some activism soon but I have not heard anything yet.
