A question to DU
If the greed rules the world then what inspires the scientist to search for knowledge, the philosopher to philosophize, the painter to paint, the nun to give her life in the slums of India for the poor? The answer, greed does not rule the world. We, as a people, are better than that. We must be, or else we worse than the most savage of bests, more primitive than bacteria.

11. Because retirement finally affords a worker the luxury of time to do something for her or his self.
Time is the greatest luxury of all.

13. Good for him. Personally, though, my last words will NOT be "damn I wanted to work one more shift."

I know that corpodems would like us all to be good little low paid loyal workers but I think I'll hold out for some kind of quality of life.

5. People only say "greed rules the world" when defending capital accumulation
When you talk about the millions and millions of people who build cars, fix broken bones, clean toilets, teach children, cook pot roasts, plumb sinks, write books and pour concrete walkways, greed is never mentioned.

Meh, I'm so tired of hearing about a handful of rich people

7. Saying "Greed rules the world" is the capitalist version of "I can't help myself".
“He reminds one of the man who murdered both his parents, and then pleaded for mercy on the grounds that he was an orphan.” - Abraham Lincoln

She thought for a second, and then replied,

"Guess I'll probly just keep on giggin' 'til the money runs out"

15. Nice Guys Finish First
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3494530275568693212#

Greed does not in fact rule the world. The question should be more about authoritarianism. Where, why, and how it exists. It's almost solely down to resource acquisition and control. One who has more can do more, and to have more you must take from others. Technology enables us to do that, but it can also enable us to provide more to everyone. Once we can do that the question is moot and the last 10k years of human history will be rendered irrelevant.

Note: this video will be gone in 9 days (Google is getting rid of "Google Video").

17. The trick for you is to enable everyone to do minority occupations like those
Scientists, philosophers, painters and nuns are uncommon. The vast majority of the world do more mundane things - grow food, work on assembly lines, work in shops and offices. Some occupations are inspirational, but most aren't, really. Growing food might be, but it's also physically hard; with the others, the end result might be 'inspirational' - if the office you work is in a hospital, perhaps - but for most, it's just part of keeping society or commerce turning, while you get enough money or food to be comfortable.

22. To put it slightly differently,
"Lust for money is the root of all evil", at least according to the book the rightists claim to adhere to. Funny, though, that they routinely forget that one when it comes to policies that address the disadvantaged.
