Bobb has Detroit police arrest teachers, teen parents. Teen parenting school will become a charter.
This is how the Emergency Financial Managers like Robert Bobb work. Quickly and without mercy. He seems to have been given complete power over Detroit's schools, even though a judge say he could not control academics.

He has said that this school for pregnant and parenting teens must be closed and turned into a charter. He has that power now.

From a Daily Kos blog today:

EFM Takeover Of Detroit Schools: Teen Mothers Arrested, Children taken Into Temporary Custody

Approximately a dozen teachers, teen mothers and their children were arrested and taken away by Detroit police while staging a peaceful sit-in protest at the Catherine Ferguson Academy in Detroit on Friday April 15th. Eight students, along with their children and some faculty members of the Catherine Ferguson Academy of Detroit, MI began the sit-in at the end of the school day in protest to Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb’s announcement to close the school for pregnant and parenting teens. The decision to occupy was made after many other attempts by students, staff and supporters to have their voices heard by EFM Robert Bobb through letter writing and petition campaigns, to no avail.

The protestors were told by police that they were trespassing and the building needed to be closed. The peaceful occupiers refused to leave and many were brought out in handcuffs. It has been reported by local news that “Some struggled, some screamed, all were put in squad cars and hauled away", while many more protestors and supporters outside watched in shock. The students themselves say they did not resist arrest. One told local reporters, "We just stood there and they just arrested us one by one ."

..."On the heels of the shocking announcement last month by Detroit Public Schools Emergency Financial Manager (EFM) Robert Bobb to close up to eight schools and sell up to 45 schools to charter companies, he slated the highly successful and unique Catherine Ferguson Academy for closure. The school, which has been featured in the film Grown In Detroit documenting the school’s urban farm and in O: The Oprah Winfrey Magazine, boasts a 90% graduation rate and 100% college and higher education acceptance upon graduation. The award winning school is specifically for pregnant and parenting teens and their children, offering a wide range of classes and child care. It is the only school of its kind in the nation.

"The school provides pre-natal and parenting classes, and offers high school student mothers the opportunity to finish their high school education immediately after giving birth by providing on-site daycare, early childhood development services, and pre-school for their children, as well as on-site medical, dental and social services, so the young women don't have to miss school to attend appointments. What also makes CFA unique is its organic garden and farm with chickens, goats and a horse, which the students maintain as part of their science education."

More on the arrests from an earlier article:

Protesters Arrested at DPS' Catherine Ferguson Academy

Some struggled, some screamed, all were put in squad cars and hauled away.

"To go in like storm troopers to arrest people who were carrying on a peaceful protest during spring break to preserve their school was just absolutely outrageous," Driver said.

At least a dozen people were arrested, including two moms who had their small kids with them.

Baldwin's three-year-old daughter was there, and she says she would do it all again if it meant saving the school that helped save her.

"I'm glad I took part in this. I'd do it a hundred times more to help the cause," she said.

They were ticketed and let go. There was a DPS spokesperson at the scene. He said that "they understand that a school can mean so much to students, parents and teachers, but that a protest is not the way to go about trying to get your message heard. Instead, they are encouraged to talk to Robert Bobb and show that their school needs to stay open."

Talk to Robert Bobb? Really. They had been trying. I doubt he would listen at all. He is one of the Broad Academy fellows who are famous for not caring for the feelings of teachers. Here is his page at the Broad Institute.

In fact Bobb is the one who walked out of his own town hall meeting when parents started speaking out.

Detroit's Robert Bobb left his own town hall meeting very upset. Cancelled later meeting.

During a contentious meeting interrupted by chants and catcalls Tuesday, students, parents and teachers lambasted a plan to close 14 Detroit schools and convert 45 others to charter schools.-- Detroit News

According to a report I got today from community activists in BAMN, "angry parents, students, teachers, and BAMN civil rights activists left Detroit schools Emergency Manager Robert Bobb stammering, shaking, and fleeing his "town hall" meeting" last night. He also canceled a second meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. this evening at Cody H.S.

In this school teen parents had someone to take care of their kids, and even more. Here is an interesting post in the comment section...seems a real shame to close such a school.

This school has a 90% graduation rate with 100% of graduating students going onto either 2 or 4-year colleges. This school also has a HUGE farm with honey bees, horses, chickens, turkeys and a garden. The only thing people are looking at is the "teen mom" thing. They are defending the only school willing to take care of them AND their children. What is going to happen to these students if the school closes?

The current governor is GOP, would call this school pandering to welfare queens. That's what I meant.

If you want to call this a Democratic policy, you're on your own.

Quite a resume:

Looks like he's changed horses, whether he announced a party change is irrelevant.

5. I taught at a high school with day care for student moms...
I can't imagine those girls would be better parents without that service. It wasn't a school for that though, and I'm not sure how much parenting instruction there was, but I'm sure it was much better than nothing.

This is a terrible thing. Some schools run on love and that's conducive to academic progress. Charter schools lean toward discipline, and that leads to ... discipline.

6. The new discipline tactics of many charter schools...
are punitive, and meant only to control and keep kids in line. It doesn't have to be that way.

I was reading some more of the comments after the article...and so many are Ayn Randian in nature. There is no love and caring in that philosophy.

7. wow arresting teen kids who are mothers, great way to positively impact their future
including the prospects for the teachers exercising their rights

corporatists are increasingly acting autocratic in their forays into the commons...i guess because they know nobody supports what they are doing, and what they are doing is stealing livable wages from teachers and an education from students.

The predators i think in the future will be selling off education the way mortgages are bundled and resold to investors. Parents will have to pay for "specialties" that were once part and parcel of a K-12 education.

He should be removed. Poor Detroit and poor Michigan.

pennies on the dollar.

"Bobb plan would convert 41 Detroit schools to charters
Micki Steele / The Detroit News

A plan that would convert 41 public schools in Detroit to charter academies received strong support today from school board president Anthony Adams at a public meeting held to present options for overhauling the financially strapped district.

Robert Bobb, emergency financial manager of Detroit Public Schools, shared several ideas at a two-and-a-half hour meeting attended by school board members and a handful of parents and other community members.

"Nine of the last 10 years you've been in deficit," Bobb told school board members during a public finance meeting at Detroit International Academy.

and actually it's his plan to convert public schools to charters. It is Obama's plan as well...one he campaigned on. Eli Broad is Arne's friend.

69. Because collectively Americans are stupid and greedy enough...
...to believe that the surest path to success is by treading on the fingers of others'. And provided with fingers to tread upon, they will "tough out" the hobnailed Gucci loafers grinding their own fingers, sure in their own minds, that with perseverance a pair of those "loafers" can one day be theirs too.

The other way I've seen this explained is that Americans are collectively convinced that they are being held back by grasping hands beneath them. But I'm not sure that "scraping off fingers clinging in desperation" puts it in any better light. (Are you aware that the most common injury in deceased shipwreck victims is http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/perimortem">perimortem brusing on the shoulders consistent with being trodden upon and the cause of death drowning.)

The bucolic America (and I must admit my own Australia) of the 20th century, grew its middle class, through it doing to the lower/rural classes (particularly African Americans and poor immigrants) what the 1% is now doing to them. There's an entire treatsie on the interrelationships of the sexes to be woven in there as well, which boils down to effectively defining women and minors as chattels within their own social levels (and to any superior), but gives them free reign over anyone of either sex that stands on a lower rung of the social ladder.

Something we fail to appreciate, is that MAINTAINING a middle class is expensive. BUILDING one on the other hand is enormously profitable. cf. Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and down through Singapore and South Korea into the Indonesian Archipelago. (Interesting trivia, Products of SK are labeled "Product of Korea" in Western markets.)

Right now in America we are simply seeing the PTBs retrieving their "capital investment" for re-investment in the far more profitable GROWING markets of China and India.

Logically Africa too is ripe for such development, but it's just too full of "God Damned N******" for "white" money to be used that way. So there, for now at least, it will remain business as usual: Straight up sociological, environmental and ecconomic rape. Her turn will come when enough of that "white" money turns to yellow.

And if the pattern holds through another 3 or 4 generations, "The Aryan Nation", KKK, and down to the passive "not in my (white) neighbourhood" mob will be seeing their "comeupance" with 3-400 years of militant racial oppression to pay back.

47. "This is no longer America" -
loaded statement. What "was" America? It began with a land grab by Europeans in which indigenous folks were displaced (and often murdered). It progressed to only land owners being able to vote ... an industrial society in which only a few owned much of the wealth (ring any bells?)... and now we are wondering why a democratic president wants to cut Social Security/Medicare (which serve our most vulnerable populations).

57. From Seattle Education..symptoms of the Broad virus.
http://seattleducation2010.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/how-to-tell-if-your-school-district-is-infected-by-the-broad-virus/

"Chicago has just learned that it will inherit Rochester, New York’s controversial and unpopular school superintendent, Jean-Claude Brizard (Broad Superintendent’s Academy “Class of 2007″). Those of us who have experienced the “leadership” of L.A. billionaire Eli Broad’s corporate-trained superintendents send Chicago our condolences. We have been there, done that, with scars to show for it, and nothing in the way of real academic or positive gains for our schools and kids.

In fact, the Broad brand has been seriously tarnished lately, to the point where it really should be considered a liability rather than an asset. Here are just a few examples of Broad supts who have been ousted or left their districts in a cloud of controversy: LaVonne Sheffield (Broad Superintendents Academy “Class of 2002″ – resigned), Rockford, Ill.; Maria Goodloe-Johnson (Broad “Class of 2003″ - fired), Seattle, Wa.; Matthew H. Malone (Broad “Class of 2003″ – resigned) former superintendent of Swampscott, MA; Deborah Sims (Broad “Class of 2005″- resigned), Antioch, CA.

Meanwhile, Detroit can’t seem to shake its power-hungry Emergency Financial Manager Bob Bobb (Broad Academy “Class of 2005″) whose illegal control of the Detroit School District was stopped in court, but has been recently ratified by a law signed by extremist Republican Governor Rick Snyder.

..."Many of the above earned No Confidence votes from their district’s teachers, and from parents too. All meted out a top-down dictatorial approach. Most alienated parents. Many closed schools. A number had questionable audits on their watch. More than one had false or questionable data to support their reforms. All commanded large salaries with perqs, while at the same time slashing services for kids and closing schools in the name of financial scarcity. A number of them avoided informing the elected school board of their plans or actively withheld information from them, effectively bypassing democracy."

62. Absolutely ridiculous...
One of the most successful schools in the entire nation gets shut down by partisan bullshit. Absolutely atrocious.

I wish there was a hell for this man to burn in.

63. It won't matter
Not until there are more people being there, active and willing to be arrested than there are places to put them and people to arrest them. The only way to win these fights is to force their hand. Until we reach that point it will be a slow creep into decay.
