MADISON – Wisconsin Wave is calling on Wisconsin citizens to assemble tomorrow, Wednesday April 20, 2011 on the East Wing of the Capitol – King Street entrance at 12:30 pm to publicly petition for a full statewide manual recount of the 2011 Wisconsin Supreme Court Election. The event will conclude with a march and rally at the offices of the General Accountability Board of Wisconsin at 212 East Washington Ave, Madison, Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Wave has sent an open letter (attached below) to Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg in support of a manual recount for an election that has tarnished the Wisconsin tradition of electoral integrity and good government. Under Wisconsin law, only a candidate can request a recount. Wisconsin Wave calls on AAG Kloppenburg to request a manual recount so that public trust can be restored in our electoral process and any doubts about the integrity of the election can be laid to rest.
“Open letter to JoAnne Kloppenburg
Dear Joanne,
We, the undersigned, wish to express our strong support for a manual recount of the 2011 Supreme Court Justice election. The proceedings of this election have been marred to a degree where the integrity of the Wisconsin electoral system has been called into question.
We feel that, given the damage done to the perceptions of electoral fairness, the only way to move forward as a state is having the results of this election certified by the gold standard in electoral transparency. We are asking for you to request a manual recount of all ballots.
Being part of a democratic process means abiding by the results of an election and accepting the will of the majority. It also means that there be a degree of certitude beyond a reasonable doubt as to the outcome of an election that has tarnished the Wisconsin tradition of good government and democratic participation. Citizens need to have confidence and trust in the accuracy of an election. This is the only true way forward.
Your opponent has dismissed the possibility of a recount as frivolous. We believe it is frivolous not to have a full accounting of this election. A manual recount may be costly, but true democracy does not come cheaply and requires courage by those who have heeded the call of public service.
Your campaign was impressive and inspiring. We urge you to request a full manual recount, on behalf not only of the people who voted for you but on behalf of the 1,497,330 voters who cast ballots in this election.
We want our children and grandchildren to grow up in a State of Wisconsin where elections continue to matter, where our leaders conduct themselves in the interest of democracy, not merely political expedience or personal convenience. This difficult decision is yours and yours alone to make. The people of Wisconsin are waiting.”
