The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is investigating an incident involving a former Parkland High School teacher and a former student, who wrote a first-person essay in her college newspaper describing her abortion after an affair with the teacher. Jessica Martin, the essay's author and a junior at N.C. Central University in Durham, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night."Now, in my junior year at NCCU, I am still scarred by the experience," Martin wrote in the April 13 edition of the Campus Echo. "I lost my only friends and abused and embarrassed myself by sleeping with a teacher and having an abortion."
Theo Helm, a spokesman for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system, said a Jessica Martin graduated from Parkland in 2008. The Winston-Salem Journal is not releasing the former teacher's name because no charges have been filed. The Journal does not normally name potential victims of sexual abuse unless they choose to identify themselves. Lisa Carl, an assistant professor of English and mass communications at N.C. Central, said she had assigned students in her composition class a personal essay. Some students chose not to publish their stories in the Campus Echo because they were too personal, Carl said Tuesday. Carl said she knew Martin had changed two of the names in the story. She said Martin texted her to say that she regretted that she had forgotten to change the name of her high school. It's not clear whether Martin took any other liberties in the essay.
An incident report filed Tuesday with the Forsyth Sheriff's Office lists only Jessica Martin's name and the name of the former teacher, with no details on what is alleged. It lists Parkland's street address as the location of the incident. Sheriff's Maj. Brad Stanley said a Parkland school official told the school's resource officer about the story. The SRO contacted sheriff's detectives, and the matter was turned over to the criminal division, Stanley said. In her essay, Martin tells how she and her best friend, whom she called Shayna, started hanging out around school with the new band director, whom she called Smith, in the girls' junior year. The current band director, whose title is music teacher, came to Parkland in 2009 after Martin left and would not have been the subject of the essay, said Helm, the school spokesman. Neither the current nor former music teacher was named Smith.By senior year, Martin wrote, she had visited Smith in his apartment to watch drum major clips on YouTube. The first night Martin visited, she said, she told the teacher she found him attractive and they kissed.

Martin wrote that Smith drove her to Greensboro for an abortion, but it's unclear when. She said he chose Greensboro because he was afraid they would be seen in Winston-Salem. Martin wrote that she is no longer in touch with Smith or Shayna, who she believes are still together.
