Hoover pulling ads from ABC over soap operas
Hoover pulling ads from ABC over soap operas

NEW YORK—A Hoover executive whose wife and mother are big fans of two ABC soap operas that were canceled last week said he is yanking the vacuum-maker's ads from the network in protest.

Hoover marketing executive Brian Kirkendall's actions have becoming a rallying point for fans of "All My Children" and "One Life to Live." ABC said last week it will end the daytime dramas, each on the air for more than 40 years, and replace them with cooking and weight-loss shows.

The number of people who said they "liked" Hoover on Facebook has jumped from around 7,000 to more than 11,000 people in a day since Kirkendall announced his move on the social media site. A columnist for Soap Opera Digest also asked fans to make Friday a "buy Hoover day" to support the company.

"It was about as innocent as you can imagine something starting," Kirkendall said on Tuesday. "Now I feel like I'm in the middle of a movement."

1. So, which is it? marketing strategy...
...to boost themselves with fans of the canceled shows, or executive arbitrariness (aren't they supposed to make decisions based on something more substantial than favored family entertainments)?

Soap opera

As an aside, why the hell are they called operas? I've never seen one of those 2 bit actors bust out in song? That's a disgrace in itself.

7. You mean some of these 2-bit actors?

To name a few actors who got their start in soaps....

Kevin Bacon
James Earl Jones
Marisa Tomei
Julianne Moore
Meg Ryan
Leonardo DiCaprio
Brad Pitt
Susan Sarandon
Josh Duhamel
Tommy Lee Jones
Eva Longoria Parker

A few more....
Christine Baranski, Charles Durning, Morgan Freeman, Kelsey Grammer, Anne Heche, Ray Liotta, Luke Perry, Ving Rhames, Eric Roberts, Kyra Sedgwick, Jean Smart, and Ed O'Neill.

Don Knotts, Larry Hagman, Kevin Kline, Morgan Fairchild,Olympia Dukakis, Viggo Mortensen, Jane Krakowski, Audrey Landers, Lee Grant, Sandy Duncan, and Angela Bassett.

Tom Berenger, Yasmine Bleeth, Dixie Carter, Marcia Cross, Roma Downey, Julia Duffy, Laurence Fishburne, Faith Ford, Judith Light, Hayden Panettiere, Ryan Phillippe, Phylicia Rashad, Blair Underwood, and Mario Van Peebles....and many others not listed.

I'm really tired of soaps being treated so poorly. Yeah, some stories get kinda "out there" but seriously, have you been reading the headlines in the real world lately? Makes soaps seem tame by comparison!

These are all hard working actors (yeah, there's a few who aren't Academy Award winning caliber, but so what.)

Just sayin'.

EVERYTHING IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY FOR THE TOP PEOPLE (ABCD execs) ...nevermind they are putting hundreds of people out of work.

eta: Can't forget Nathan Fillion for all you Firefly & Castle fans. :)

8. soaps are treated poorly because they are pathetic
bad writing, bad acting, bad sets, bad everything....

There's a reason they have never been played in prime time..Think about it.

Shit, The Jerry Springer show was a huge step up from soap "operas"

"could it happen in real life!"

9. Where do you think "prime time serials" originated from?

With their limited budgets I think they do pretty damn good. And poor acting? Have you ever even watched a soap for years at a time? Sure there are some stinkers but there is also some pretty good acting.

Soaps weren't always treated so poorly....they used to be the money makers for the networks back in the day. Cable put the hurt to the soaps. Budgets have been cut. Yeah, times change but there is always a place for telling good stories.Recycling old writers & stories is a problem too but I disagree they are "pathetic". Pathetic is cheap reality shows.

12. VHS?
Who even plays VHS anymore?

I've been watching soaps for over 50 years so, no thx, don't need your MIL's old hoarded stuff.

I've seen it all..the good the bad & the ugly. lol. But I still feel soaps have a place on TV and I hate to see em dumped by lazy ass execs.

So...good on Hoover FWIW.

13. I would imagine if you did a cross-section of the population
The vast majority of folks who still watch VHS also are fans of soap "operas"

Somebody in college should do a thesis on it :)

18. in recent years they hired shitty writers to ruin the shows to get rid of union jobs
but the soap operas had some amazing stories and actors throughout decades. they dealt with issues like abortion, gay rights racism etc.

20. They were ahead of their time in many cases, too.
Recycled writers and interference from the top down is what is killing these shows.

4. That's OK, there, Mr. Hoover Executive. Dyson will step in
and run their ads for overpriced vacuum cleaners, instead of your ads for overpriced vacuum cleaners. See ya around.

5. A less than stellar article as it doesn't give Hoover's reason for pulling the ads.
Anyone know the reason?

6. Ummmm... The reason would be the cancellation of the two soaps. It's
right in the article. Indeed, it's the entire premise of the article, that Hoover pulled that ads BECAUSE OF the cancellation announcement.

11. Whatever Hoover. Maybe it sucks. But no one really cares about these shows anymore.
Or at least not enough people. Or at least not enough of the right people who advertisers care about.

16. people do care, i watch these shows and the truth is that Brian Frons who is in charge of ABC Daytim
has ruined the shows to drive people away. and the whores at Disney and ABC only care about their own profits.

now they can get rid of a bunch of union jobs. not just actors but the backstage people.

they ruined the shows by killing off and firing long time characters and actors that the fans loved.

19. Figure about 100% of the jobs being lost are UNION jobs.

UNION jobs. There is nothing new here except some people are fighting back. Isn't that what so many others are trying to do?? Stop the destruction of unions?

Frons micromanaged the shows to the point they drove fans away....you are absolutely right on that JI7.

14. Figures you'd find snide remarks here about something positive.
The cancellation of these soaps will cost thousands of jobs. The AFL-CIO is certainly concerned about it.

17. I hope more sponsors jump on this bandwagon.

This is going to have some serious repercussions. SWGE, DG, SAG & AFTRA are upset, too. OLTL is the last soap in NY. This stupid move from ABC/Disney is going to hurt a lot of people.....for a long time.

Hoover sucks in a good way....ABCD in the worst way.
