Does anyone really have a doubt that the Tea Party is a racist organization? Personally I've never met a rightwinger who wasn't racist and I know a lot of them.

5. When I was growing up my dad was a racist and said things similar to what the freepers say.

My dad was a poor factory maintenance worker. A couple of reasons he said what he did was because he said it to his fellow workers which was a way of gaining acceptance from them and because he and his fellow workers were so low on the food chain that they needed someone lower than they were just to feel like they were not on the bottom.

I think freepers have many of the same motives. I grew up in the 50's and 60's and 50 years later it hasn't changed much.

One thing I give my dad credit for was not taking part in buying a house on our block so a Black family couldn't move in. The main reason was because he didn't have any money I found out later.

14. The first time the Portland area voted on a North-South light rail line

there was a racist whispering campaign to the effect that black gang members from North Portland were going to ride the line down to Clackamas Town Center and recruit white kids into gangs.

Before the Westside Light Rail Line was opened, there was a rumor--printed as a front page story in the paper no less!-- that Latino gangs had each claimed one of the stations and would have exclusive rights to mug people there. It was totally false, of course.

The righties know their audience. Being on the payroll of the oil companies, one of their jobs is to stir up sentiment against mass transit, and what better way to do so than to appeal to racism.

16. Mass transit debates go far beyond energy issues

Quite often they are very much about race. When I was in high school, a mall opened in a nearby suburb. It was the third mall in the area and the dynamic quite accurately mirrored Chris Rock's comedy bit about malls: 'Every city has two malls . . . the mall white people go to and the mall white people used to go to.'

After debate, it was decided that bus service would not extend to this new mall . . . ostensibly the argument related to space/access issues, but I and probably many other people judged it to be as much about race as anything else.

20. This craps happens in Rio too.

Any improvement in bus or metro that allows people from the poor neighborhoods get more easily to the beach region is met with exactly the same reaction. "They'll litter the beach", "they'll play bad music loudly", "they're coming en masse to mug us", "the government was paid for by the criminal gangs to build those lines".

I swear the last one is true. People did say that.

Now they're crisscrossing the city with highways for the World Cup and Olympics, that bullshit is coming back with a vengeance.
