Madison Wisconsin Recount Rally 4-20-2011 Report and Pics

Just got home from the "Recount Rally" in Madison. This impromptu event sent a message to JoAnne Kloppenburg that the People of Wisconsin very much want her to formally request a recount of the April 5 State Supreme Court Race.

Several hundred people participated. Speeches were made by politicians and citizens alike. There was a significant contingent of our bought-and-paid-for "free" press there. Wonder how much play it will get locally? Nationally?

After gathering at the Capitol, and hearing speeches there, the assembled citizens marched to the Government Accountability Board building for more speeches and a friendly greeting from Board employees.

Speakers called for fair elections, without which our democracy is doomed. Several speakers mentioned the issue of voter confidence, and how it is imperative that Americans have faith in our elections. If voters become cynical they will discontinue voting, further undermining our democracy. I had the pleasure of talking about how easy it is to rig any electronic component in an election. My personal call is for paper ballots, hand counted, nothing less.

Unfortunately I just heard a guy from the GAO on WPR talking about how state law mandates the recount be done through the same machines as counted the original vote. It was unclear to me exactly why this mandate didn't always apply as the GAO guy said some counties will hand count. Really not what I wanted to hear this afternoon. Also everyone on the Ben Merenz(sp) program this hour seems very blase' about the whole idea of a recount. Yeah it will be done but it's probably not gonna change anything. The one guy went into a spiel about how partisans from both sides were quick to call shenanigans only when their side was trailing.

Many audit and recount laws were rewritten with the "assistance" of the private corporations that sold us the voting machines.
There are certain ballots that require a court order to recount by hand - The only one I am sure of is the Optical Scan ballot.

According to DUer, Peace PAtriot, "...outrageous that a candidate has to go to court to get a real hand-count. This is a corporate lawyer written law! And it is an example of the extreme danger of the corporate invasion of our vote counting system.
This was part of a wave of corruption from the $3.9 billion e-voting boondoggle passed by the Anthrax Congress (in the same month as the Iraq War Resolution, Oct '02."

There is a lot to digest in Klop's statement... I need to read more.
