Mom and Dad is moving in. Or- Guess who is gonna pay for mom and dads nursing home? |
|
Edited on Wed Apr-20-11 06:53 PM by notadmblnd
Tweety just did a segment on a poll in regards to cuts Medicaid and Medicare. What was said is that- almost all parties want politicians to keep their hands off Medicare, but most conservatives have no qualms about cutting Medicaid.
One of those being interviewed said that what most people don't realize is that eliminating Medicaid will create a host of problems when it's time to put mom and dad in a home. Medicaid is what pays the nursing home bill, not Medicare.

1. Yep. The combination took care of my Mom in her last two years of life. |
|
If either had been pulled, I have no idea what would have happened.

3. In orer to get medicaid to pay, Sr's have to divest themselves of their assets |
|
But it is a pretty common practice when people get to the age they can't live alone or take care of themselves any longer.

the hope we invested in the U.S. economy and, then, there'd be less pressure on Medicare and Medicaid.

Many gift it to their kids just so the government doesn't get it.

You'll get used to living in multi-generational households again. Because apparently even most DUers are ready to embrace the new order with open arms. Just make granny a pallet on the floor.

And what family member is gonna want to help mom with her bowel movement when she can't go on her own? How many are going to want to change dad's shitty diaper or clean him up when he takes your advice and finally does blow it out his ass? And who is gonna make sure that grandma and grandad's bedsores are tended? Who's gonna make sure they are fed and give them their medicine?
It takes a very strong person to deal with oldsters and the problems that they have later in life. I applaud anyone who currently does any of this for their parents.

My mother had terminal cancer, and my sister moved her from Florida here to Georgia. She took care of her in her final months. Made sure she got her meds, fed her and changed her diapers. I give her a lot of credit because I could not have handled it.

20. I fear for that future...it is thankfully not that hard yet for me |
|
And like any family you do what needs to be done. But for others to act like taking seniors benefits and their dignity from them (even future seniors) is a crime. What did the elderly do before the days of SS? They moved to the county poorhouses or homes for the infirm and indigent. Even at it's poorest, Americans did not rob their elders, throw their aging bodies in the gutter and laugh at their cleverness. Meanspirited, shortsighted. Sad.
May any who are a party to such know the anguish of being old, infirm, poor and alone. I curse them all to such an end.

17. and it's a guarantee that the process will continue, since |
|
dying sometimes takes many years, and when a woman (it;s usually a woman) has to quit her job at the worst possible time for her own retirement prospects, so she can care for aged parents/in-laws, she's "agreeing" to impoverish herself in her own dwindling years, and pray that there will be a family member willing to care for her.

27. Nursing homes are there for a reason |
|
Often times there are ccmplicated procedures that need to be done that require skilled training or the patient has dementia and is unruly. MIL had to stay in a nursing home because hubby's BP was way too high for us to take her home.
Taking care of some one at home is not for every situation. Q
Also having the elder at home means that the woman ( usually ) has to give up her job to do 24x7 care.
When you run out of money your assets are put into a Medicare/Medicaid trust. The trust is drained until you qualify for medicaid. Cutting Medicaid for nursing homes means care gets to be less and less when you most need it.

28. The gov and baggers want to cut federal funding for Medicaid entirely |
|
because they think that only poor people use it. I was pointing out how many Seniors use it later in life. I know taking care of the elderly is not for everyone. But if it is eliminated, who is gonna pay for mom and dads stay? You are. If you can't afford to- what do you think will happen?

tax money that you are now sending to pay for tea-bagging red state seniors, allowing them to rail against democracy. I would rather my blue state governor, who is a fine human being, get my SS and Medicare tax dollars back and decide how to best use them to support my blue state seniors. So, the issue is not one of going along with republican plans, liberals like you and Nancy Pelosi are doing just fine in that area, the issue is about how best to fuck republicans and prevent a red hell from sweeping across even solid blue states. For too long, blue states like California, New York, Illinois, et al, have paid the bills while red states have incessantly dragged america down a rabbit hole. This poster says it is time to cut the fucking umbilical cord.

|
But because I feed her and give her a roof to live under, she can afford things like gasoline for her car, a new pair shoes, a trip to the hairdresser. She is able to live in dignity. The government for all their pretense of greatness could not give her or any other elderly poor more than the crumbs from a moldy meal.

|

voters. Republicans won't touch SS and Medicare, those programs already overwhelmingly favor red voters. The disgusting aspect of it all to me is that liberals like Nancy Pelosi have their heads in the sand, instinctively coming out to fight SS and Medicare cuts instead of directing cuts toward where they should happen, to red voting seniors, who pay little into the funds for the two programs, but get the lion's share of benefits. Pelosi is insuring that one day her deep blue SF district will turn red as a tidal wave of red destruction sweeps over the nation as screwed blue state voters give up hope that their leaders understand a fucking thing about how to out smart republicans.

luckily Medicare helped otherwise I don't know what would have become of him or myself. The last 6 months had home health care come to help and advise, can't say enough about how grateful I was for their physical and emotional support.

18. I was the sole caregiver for my mother with Alzheimer's for over 6 years |
|
until I could no longer physically care for her. She was put in a nursing home and Medicare paid the first month. Then she was put on Medicaid for a month when she passed. :( I don't know what I would have done if there was no Medicaid as I couldn't care for and didn't have the funds to pay for her care. What do they expect people to do if they cut Medicaid or make a block grant and the funds run out? What kind of country are we going to have? I worry about being a burden to my family some day. I wish I could have the confidence that Medicaid would be there for me some day.

and older, and no family left, it becomes increasingly more difficult to survive. Currently living with friends who are about the same age. If something happened to them, I have no idea what I would do.......live under a bridge somewhere I guess. But I wouldn't want the government officials to have a hard time with their wealth and their health care we pay for.

She's been with me for 10 years now. we're not wiping each others butts yet, but I've smelled her farts, and something tells me the future is not going to be good for the one who stays healthiest the longest.
When push comes to shove though, I will wipe her ass.

the chance to buy a new pair of shoes, have her hair done and enjoy her. I'm single and have been extremely nice to my nieces and nephews, the two oldest I have repeatedly told them, that I am to be kept in my home as long as possible, then they are to pick out the best nursing home for me.
