Fifteen Biggest RW Lies about the Economy
I cannot urge people enough to watch this video.

Joshua Holland argues that many of the claims made by conservatives about the economy are wrong. He spoke about the topic on March 31, 2011, at Demos in New York City. He responded to questions from members of the audience.

Holland makes many good points - one of which is that our combined personal losses in housing value is a bigger deficit than the Federal Government deficit referenced 24/7 by all the RW (and the Democrats who are enmeshed with them.)

He also makes the point that the excessive payments that the American citizenry forks over to the Big Insurers, Big Pharmaceutical companies, and the American medical model also creates a bigger economic hole than the Government Deficit. (And doesn't make us healthier or add any years to our lives above what people in places where so much money is not spent on health.)

Another point he makes is that all the Big Shot Politicians talking endlessly about the deficit, there is no - ABSOLUTELY NO -ability to spend any time talking about the above points.

He discusses the importance of the above topics, and also the tremendous situation our nation faces when 16% of the population doesn't work or doesn't work full time.

1. 16%
Where's that figure come from? Our labor participation rate indicates that nearly 36% of working-age adults in the United States are not working. 16% seems ridiculously low - that would be one in six, approximately. From what I see there are many more than one in six who are out of work.

2. Oh, I agree with you. His answer might be: That is the recorded number.
Many Many people have dropped out of the unemployed count, as their benefits have expired and they are not looking any more.

My husband and I both would be among the 36% you mention, were we not extremely lucky to have a business that has become viable just as everyone else's economy is in the tank.

But if we didn't have our small business, I would not be looking for work. I have been told to my face that due to the amount of insurance premiums my age group demands of an employer, I am wasting my time by going on interviews and spending the time, gas money and effort attempting to find work.

3. I had a similar experience
I dropped out of the system, started working from home as a computer programmer. My theory was that the difference in the amount of money companies were spending for my services, as an employee/contractor of a third party, were several times my actual compensation, and that both myself and the end client would do better to cut out the middleman entirely. It was rough because I had no business skills, but the school of hard knocks is teaching me quickly and effectively.

With the economy as it is, a lot of companies are suddenly looking to cut costs any way they can, and the outsource-it-to-India crowd just can't get the quality required for a business in the US.

5. Wishing you the very best of luck
In the end, your being independent will keep you employed.

It took us quite a while to get things going, but now we are glad we invested out time in this project of ours.
