I can't believe I ever thought Dennis Miller was either smart or funny
Funny was gone years ago, but I still thought he was fairly smart and well-informed.

I watched the late replay of him on the O'Reilly show.

He actually thought that "NATO" stood for "North American Treaty Organization." He repeated it a few times.

He finally corrected his error after he got the buzz in his ear. But he looked kind of rattled for the rest of the segment.

From the context, it is clear that he had no idea that Europe has anything at all to do with NATO.

To be fair and balanced, I was shocked to see Marty Meehan declare on Cenk's show that the Republicans control both the House and Senate...

Maybe his statement was supposed to be a special kind of nuance, but he stated that the Republicans control the Senate. Maybe he accidentally spoke the truth.

But I like it when a smart-ass know-it-all, like Dennis Miller, is exposed as ignorant.

TODAY'S WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD. :)

5. So he actually isn't an idiot.
Not a total idiot anyway. What I wonder about people like Miller is, do they ever have a moment of self reflection? Do they wake up one morning and think "what the fuck am I doing, what was I thinking?" Do they do that and then realize that they've burned all their bridges and have no way to pay the rent other than to continue to suck up to the vile bastards they got in bed with? Or is there really nothing left upstairs in Miller-land?

18. Yes
They live a guilt-ridden life of sucking up to the bastards they had thought to be their saviors.

20. Yup. But you know, the inner Dennis must have been there
all along. I know a bunch of people who were physically in the WTC area that day whose politics didn't change a bit because of it. If anything, once the initial fear had passed, they came out even more tolerant and more reflective than they had been before.

Tolerant and reflective don't make for good teevee, though...

4. He's gotten lazy.
As I recall, he had his own television show for a while. He interviewed some person (seemed to be an Indian or Pakistani) who was embracing some liberal idea. Miller tried to humiliate the guy who, although puzzled at first by the hostility, turned it around by finding huge holes in Miller's knowledge of the subject. Miller tried to end the interview as quickly as possible, but he looked like a moron. And all he had to do was prepare.

23. ding ding ding!
he was at his best when doing those long rambling rants with loads of sometimes esoteric references to books, characters, historical or mythological figures and events, and so on.

in view of miller's last decade, it should be no surprise that all that meant that it was someone other than miller who was so well-read, lucid and funny.

7. He's been a wing nut for quite some time.
I remember his show on HBO and had to stop watching he's the only comedian that comes to mind who leans so far right.

Jebus! We really do need to get the real news and facts from guys like JS and SC. And imo, the Dean of Reality - RIP George Carlin. Miss you man.

10. George Carlin was great for a long time
But toward the end not so much. Toward the end he was just a nihilist. He said himself that he was hoping for bigger disasters for his own perverted entertainment. He was one of the greatest comedians of all time, but toward the end, he lost it. His comedy became pointless and hateful, and worst of all, unfunny.

15. "comedy became pointless and hateful" - sounds like most these days
Comedians are some of the bitterest most self-loathing people on earth by and large.

And sometimes, that's fucking hilarious. But sometimes it gets old laughing at others pain, failures or lack of luck in the draw.

9. I will never forget how he got the profile of T McVeigh on the Friday before the bombing.
Yeah he was smart and funny. Then something happened and ....

I wish I had the video but I lost it in a move years ago. It was a brilliant rant. It talked about a white skin head who's only enemy was the one staring back at his on self in the mirror.

Mind you this was on the Friday before the bombing in OK. He got it straight up.

But now he is just a tool of the RW.

But for all of those fans ...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST86JM1RPl0

I loved going to see his show live.

13. Miller has always been a joke stealing hack
Many years after SNL, he acted as though Weekend Update was HIS bit and that he did it better than anyone on the show. The fact is that Chevy Chase owned that spot and did it infinitely better than Miller.

He is unfunny and not nearly as smart as he portrays himself. I've said it before, Miller is mostly unfunny becuase he is dishonest. It is hard to be funny and dishonest. Most people instinctively know that Miller's comedy is based on lies and hate.

I liked him too, about 30 years ago. He's been a douche bag and a non-player since then.

that we both hit 10,000 posts at the same time

or was that 5,000 posts?

But I am not sure how one becomes the worst person in the world simply by confusing Atlantic with American. Not when there are rapists and spouse abusers and dishonest lazy thiefs out there pulling their crap every day.

I was making an allusion to the Olbermann bit.

I do, though, think Dennis Miller is a bit of a dick.

27. He's on O'Reilly for god's sake!
He knows how far he's dropped and what his prospects are.
He knows he's a whore and not a very good one either.

I bet he made more money on the Tales from the Crypt " The Mortuary is a vampire whore house" movie than he does being O'Reilly's flying monkey.

28. I actually do remember the last time he made me laugh
It was when the Saddam Hussien statue was pulled down, and he remarked that it "looked like a narcoleptic hailing a cab."

Since then, it's been all downhill for poor Dennis and his rightwing comedy act.
