Fascinating: "Open-Source Blueprint for Civilization"
Marcin Jakubowski introduces the concept of building inter-connective modular farming equipment using re-cycled material. It's basically a big Erector Set so you can dismantle one thing and assemble something completely different using the same parts. He has actual blueprints for 50 different projects of which 8 have already been built. He talks about the uses not only in the U.S. but in third-world applications to feed starving populations. It's only about 4 minutes long. I thought other DUers might find it interesting:

1. OK, one shameless kick
and then I'll stop. I know it's kind of nerdy stuff but the implications are pretty profound.

6. I was astonished at some of the stuff he could fit in there
I expected basic agricultural equipment, generators, other things along those lines. Stuff like 3D printers, bioplastic extruders, circuit mills and aluminum extractors was just incredible.

I'd love to see how his ideas pan out over the next few years; one of the niftier TED talks I've seen in awhile, and that's a high bar.

14. Open source machining is doing something similar..
Basically an entire machine shop based around hand made tools that incorporate old auto and truck engine blocks as the main structural component.
