In letter to Pastor Terry Jones, Dearborn mayor says city not ruled by Islamic law

In an open letter Wednesday to Pastor Terry Jones, Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly Jr. blasted claims that his city is under Islamic law, noting it has three strip clubs and a factory that makes pork products sitting across the street from a mosque.

"None of that should be allowed under Shari'a law," O'Reilly wrote, referring to a set of Islamic rules and customs.

The impassioned letter was the city's latest attempt to convince the Quran-burning Christian pastor to stop his planned Friday protest outside the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn. And it represents another effort by the city to counter attempts to label it as being under Islamic law because of its sizable Muslim population.

Ummmmm ... wow. It has come to this. The mayor of Dearborn feels the need to deny that his town is an Islamic state.

Orville Hubbard would have just met them at the city limits.
With a bunch of his head-busting cops. Of course, that was a different era in Dearborn.

1. Terry Jones is a sick twisted fuck.
He and his 10 followers doing their best to bring about another 9/11. Joyfully and on purpose.

4. This whole 'Muslims are taking over America" thing is insane.
I live in the Detroit area. About 1/4 of my neighborhood is of Middle Eastern origin, albeit many of the immigrants to my particular community in the NW suburbs of Detroit are Iraqi Chaldean Christians, not Muslim.

The whole idea that Muslims are on some agenda to "take over" America, convert everyone, and impose Sharia law is just another one of the insane paranoid fantasies of the fundamentalist Christian right.

I guess they are worried because, if it were true, and it ain't, trust me, it would interfere with their own plans to take over America and impose their own particular brand of theocracy upon us all.

5. All signs are in Arabic in one section of Dearborn, not far from those Dearborn hams. Mmm. Good ham.
And, Lyle's still serving sliced-ham sandwiches inches thick with an extra slice on the top if you're eating in -- across the street from City Hall.

Many people would love to be rid of the strip clubs, but they are entrenched.

Sharia law, no.

6. The closest store to my Brooklyn apartment...
...is around the corner, and owned by Muslims.
They have a spot in the back where the owner does prayers.
They sell me beer and pork products.
I have often seen them give a break to poor people who are buying food.
Once, the lady in front of me in line was 50 cents short for her purchase.
I was just buying beer, and I kicked in the 4 bits.
Since then the guys behind the counter always have a big smile for me.
We often say hello on the street.
I've watched the owner's kid grow from a shy 12 year old to confidant 20 year old.
"How you doin' buddy?" every time I walk in the store.
They're always very polite to my wife.

The point of all of this is... Terry Jones is an asshole.

7. Muslims are obliged to do works of charity.
My favorite gas station/store is run by a family. Every once in a while, I'll get an ice cream and one of the kids will say "this one is on me." Sweet, loving people who have to take a lot of guff from some of their customers, and from the bank they do biz with (BoA) who just shut them down for a week because of a bank error. Oh, and I doubt they will be reimbursed for the lack of income created by that bank error.
