14 year old tea partier reacts to Wisc hecklers
Edited on Thu Apr-21-11 02:50 PM by RamboLiberal
Fourteen-year-old Tricia Willoughby gave a speech at a podium on the steps of the Capital building in Madison, Wisconsin to a Tea Party rally on Sunday, and videos of her speech -- and opposition protesters yelling and cursing at her -- took the Internet by storm. ABC News spoke with Willoughby, who said she respects the right of others to protest and air their views, but thinks the tactics used on Sunday were beneath American dignity.

A video taken from the crowd of several hundred people during Willoughby's speech shows an anti-Tea Party protester yelling obscenities, making obscene gestures and screaming "Go home, you little brat!" at the Willoughby. The protester's identity is not known.

Willoughby's speech, although arguably partisan, did not include any personal attacks. Instead, she called on Americans to come together to lower the federal deficit, which she believes can be done by cutting spending and lowering taxes.

"When that particular man was screaming obscenities at me, he wasn't criticizing my logic, he wasn't criticizing what I was saying, he was just saying I was a little brat and I should go home because I was simply a member of the opposing side up at the podium," Willoughby said. "My first reaction was actually to laugh. I was shocked that he was so immature that he was screaming crazy things at me and not listening to what I was saying."

First off I'm sorry to see one so young to be so brainwashed. And Tricia did you watch the crap Obama supporters put up with from McCain/Palin supporters in 2008? You weren't too young to have missed that on TV. Oh, I forgot you were probably watching Faux. I'll give you that you probably were too young for the swiftboating of Kerry and the ugliness of Wingnuts outside Kerry events!

I applaud you for getting involved in politics. I hope you have an open mind and listen to more than your parents, Faux news & only one side's viewpoint.

1. Talk about indoctrination
If you can't make a decision about drinking or smoking until you are 21 or 18 respectively why should you be allowed to get in involved in politics until your at least 18?

14. Sort of but I think my point was
You always here the repukes talk about how the left indoctrinates our children, but this girl has obviously been brainwashed to believe all their bullshit and is already a lost mind at 14. Unless she starts to open her mind, she will never be able to think critically, which I feel is a horrible waist.

21. I wonder if she is home-schooled?
And I have nothing against home schooling except IMHO it closes off the exposure to other ideas, viewpoints and discussions.

I have a feeling I'd have been a far different person & less liberal if I had been exposed only to the ideas of my parents & somewhat close-minded religion.

That sounds like critical thinking to me. And you are making basically the same attack as the potty mouth in the audience.

I think attacking children is even more unbecoming than using them as props.

You then believe there should be no young activists? Or that young activists should be forbidden from speaking on topics which have little direct impact on them, yet may affect their future, their family, their friends?

Or are you beginning to realize the absurdity of your position...?

Edited on Thu Apr-21-11 03:06 PM by Drale
whether they are 14 or 80 and people who spout things that make no sense should not be speaking to crowds, but now that I think about it that is what the entire tea party is based on isn't it? But I still don't like the idea of parents forcing their views on their children. Everyone needs to be open to new ideas and learn how to think critically.

Sure, she's homeschooled and has probably inherited her parents' beliefs, but not all homeschooled kids are mindless drones who don't know how to do their own research.

At least she's out in public, where she can be exposed to other beliefs.

52. "When I was a child, I spoke as a child,
I understood as a child, I thought as a child ..." Corinthians 13: 11

I am glad myself that I did not give a valedictorian speech when I was 18. I would probably still be embarrassed by the dumb things I would have said.

This 14 year old does not know squat about history, or about economics or about sociology. She has never had to work for a living, to pay bills, to keep food on the table or a roof over her head. She has a child's understanding of the world, even if she does look like she's over 20. Unless somebody else wrote the speech, or she is some kind of savant who has already read 100 college textbooks, and all of Michener's oeuvre, the audience is probably dumber for having listened to it.

53. My first thought was Parlock! From the Top Ten Conservative Idiots
http://www.democraticunderground.com/top10/04/171.html
September 20, 2004

You have to feel sorry for Phil Parlock. I mean, the guy was just trying to exercise his First Amendment rights at a John Kerry campaign event, and he was viciously attacked by Democratic thugs. They even made his daughter cry!

"They just pounced on us," said Phil Parlock, "She was crying; they were pushing and shoving her." My God - will those evil Democrats stop at nothing? John Kerry must hate children! Actually, it looks like it's Phil Parlock who hates children - see, this isn't the first time Mr. Parlock has made it into the papers after being "pounced on" at a Democratic rally. After he and his 12-year-old son Louis smuggled Bush signs into an Al Gore event back in 2000, Louis apparently hoisted a girl onto his shoulders. According to the Charleston Daily Mail, "'She walked up and said 'I'll get on your shoulders and hold a sign,' " Louis said. While she was sitting on Louis' shoulders waving a Bush-Cheney sign, a man who identified himself as a volunteer for the Gore campaign tried to pull the sign out of the girl's hands, Parlock said. He pulled so hard that Louis and the girl fell over. 'That sounds like an exaggeration,' said Sarah Feinberg, spokeswoman for Gore's West Virginia campaign." And - would you believe it - Parlock was a victim of nasty liberals at a Clinton campaign event back in 1996 as well! Again, according to the Charleston Daily Mail, "The Huntington man said he was knocked to the ground by a Clinton supporter when he tried to display a sign that read 'Remember Vince Foster' ... 'It must have been a strict Democrat who did this,' Parlock said." Yup, our Phil certainly has a habit of complaining to the media about Democratic "thuggery." Kinda makes you wonder why he took his young daughter to the event last week. But then, once you realize that Parlock appears to have a relationship with the photographer that snapped the above pic, and that the man wearing the union shirt holding the ripped up sign looks suspiciously like one of his sons, and that Parlock even happened to be around when his local Republican party headquarters were shot at by a unknown assailant ...well, it just kinda makes you think. Funny how our Phil always seems to end up in the wrong place at the wrong time - with the media in tow.

(Damn, how I miss the Top Ten!)

I have gone to several protests in Michigan lately. Here's the thing. People understand that for the benefit of what you are protesting, you do NOT get ugly or aggressive. This man/heckler seemed to be alone. He was being filmed and he KNEW it. He kept looking at the camera, and the person filming was narating..... looks kinda staged to me. My opinion.

45. I agree. The look that "protester" gave the cameraman was more an "Are you getting this?" look than
either the annoyance or embarrassment you'd expect if that "protester" really had been on our side.

He was faking it. ABC ought to have found out who he is, what's his 'story'. I noticed he was not listening to anything the speaker was saying. He was shouting the most vulgar nasty things to stir people up. And it worked, to gauge by YouTube comments.

55. So typical of these people. Walker even suggested agents provocateurs.
The 'young' lady, who doesn't look young at all, in her fancy faux colonialist grab, needs to examine those who put her up to this stunt.

She and the 'heckler' were all part of another media set up. We need to contact ABC and question their integrity in not vetting this story but showing it to millions as part of the Koch Brothers' disinformation campaign.

They're not going to stop these dirty tricks because it pays too well. I am sick of people that would do these things when it's hard enough for the average person to even speak up for themselves in this bow to the rich society we're living in.

...but I find it very strange that a 14-year-old is so worked up over taxes considering she more than likely isn't even old enough to legally work yet (hopefully) in WI. The poor girl looks like she's in her 30s already from that picture and those ruffles ain't helping her either. As others mention here, she's plenty young enough to eventually have an epiphany.

58. More info on her via WSJ: her parents are pro-life activists and she's in a debate club.
And yes, she is homeschooled.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704004004576271811083131734.html

The article has the idiotic headline "A Star Is Born."

The debate club background explains the posturing and smug look, I suppose (hey, I've been on debate teams and I know how smug some debaters can get -- especially the younger ones who think winning a debate means they have godlike powers of persuasion).

And having pro-life activists for parents and being homeschooled would explain why she looks brainwashed and stressed.

60. This reminds me of when Sarah Palin took her youngest daughter to a Philly Flyers hockey game
This was right before the 2008 election and Philadelphia is a very liberal city. To make matters worse, a story went out earlier in the day where Sarah told people at a Philly function she was cheering on the Rangers (one of the players was from Alaska). A smart politician would have known how to answer that question without offending either team (like "I'm cheering on that guy from Alaska but I hope both teams put on a great game" type answer).

So in front of a very progressive crowd in the city notorious for the worst fans ever, Sarah Palin was suppose to drop the hockey puck at center ice. This was the brainchild of Ed Snider, Flyers owner and Bush suck-up. Before the game they were honoring hockey moms, and you could hear the cheers for the first woman to come out - a local NJ hockey mom. Then when Sarah came out, you could hear the boos start even though they played loud patriotic music as Palin walked out onto the center ice (they didn't play the music for the NJ Hockey Mom who was introduced before Palin). Palin trots her youngest daughter out with her and wearing a flyers jersey. Didn't matter, Flyers fans did me proud and boo'd the bejesus out of Sarah Palin.

Next day the conservatives made a big stink about attacking Palin's kid. Geez, are they nutz? Any person with a slight knowledge of Philadelphia and their fans (which should include Ed Snider) would have known exactly what would happen and either not have done a publicity stunt like that or at least ask that Sarah not trot out her kid with her.

So personally I see this as the stupidity of the Tea Party. I almost guarentee they wanted to find a 14 year old kid to put out there knowing that the pro-union people would be there.

And as for that cute little tea party kid. You need to turn off Faux News and read some books.

122. Yeah, but she's still only 14, and the iron's still hot so to speak
We can look at this in one of two ways: A) she made up her own mind entirely in this issue, after doing her research on either side, or B) she's a homeschooled kid who inherited her parents' beliefs.

If we go with A, then yeah, sure, be critical, but still don't be an asshole. We can be critical of her beliefs without telling her she's a "fucking twerp" or "a stupid kid"; sinking to ad hominems just makes us look weak.

If we go with B, then it's pretty fair to say she's been brainwashed. The way you reclaim a brainwashed mind isn't by insulting the person, but by gradually exposing them to the truth. It's very likely when she gets out in the real world her beliefs are going to change anyway.

Not all progressives were born progressive.

Her opinions may change over time, but at least she's involved. The heckling may have been staged, but I doubt it. There are bad actors on both sides. I like to think the majority of them are conservative, but I've witnessed awful behaviour from all walks of life.

This encounter will help frame her opinions. I hope she'll bump into people who will challenge her convictions, not more adults who apparently lacked the intellectual heft to do anything but be rude. I mean if you can't challenge the ideas of a 14 year old, intellectually, maybe rallies are too advanced for some.
