County to fly Confederate flag at courthouse
Commissioners in a central Georgia county have decided to fly the Confederate battle flag 365 days a year at the county courthouse, angering civil rights leaders and sparking the latest round of controversy in a years-long dispute.

AJC file photo The Dodge County Commission has voted to fly the Confederate battle flag 365 days a year at the county courthouse.

The Telegraph of Macon reports that Monday's vote by the Dodge County Commission has angered representatives of the NAACP.

John Battle, president of the Dodge County branch of the NAACP, said the decision was like a slap in the face.

Only one commissioner, Archie Dupree, voted against the decision, which was made after a brief closed session. Dupree said he thought it would be inappropriate to fly the flag, and that it would offend people

3. Here in GA, the GOP is in a race to return to the racist and segregated 1950s.

To quote my local independent weekly, The Flagpole (Athens, GA, April 20, 2011 edition): "Stay classy, Georgia, and keep voting like a bunch of stupid, backwards racists. It'll be 1953 again soon enough, complete with dirt roads and the sixth grade educations."
:(

7. The Oldenburg stallion in the picture, Corominio, is my Oldenburg mare's (Cotton's) sire.
I have been a DU member for many years, but due to being laid off from my job of 16 years when my baby was 4 months old, I have not posted much at all. I only recently got a computer and internet access at home. Do you have horses and/or ride too? I ride hunt seat equitation, or, at least I used to before I lost my health insurance along with my job back in March 2009. I would give anything to be able to ride again, but as a single, unemployed mom (I'm a 99er) with a baby and a mortgage, riding is something I cannot afford to do. I can't afford to get hurt without health insurance. I have to sell my beautiful Oldenburg mare, who I've had since the night she was born. I can't afford to keep her any longer. I thought the economy might improve, but unemployment is still at 10% here in GA (and it went down last week.) I am trying to find a good home for her with someone who can afford to buy her and take good care of her too. She's my equine baby and it breaks my heart to have to sell her but my little baby boy needs me even more.

9. Well I have missed you and very glad to see you back
I grew up with horses and I know a good one when I see it. Your equine baby is beautiful!
I am so sorry that you are having a tough time...I know the feeling, but luckily I still have health insurance, even though it is getting harder and harder to use it.

I hate that these tough decisions have to be made and I am so sorry.:(

10. Thank you for your kind words. You, as a horse lover, understand the special bond with horses.

:)

I am going to have to take a huge loss when I sell her but I cannot bring myself to sell her to just anyone. I'm trying to find her that special person who will care for her as I have.

11. Your mare is beautiful. I live in Georgia also.
I just wish I could afford to buy her. I owned horses when I lived in Florida, but as I was also a single mom of two kids, the horses became too expensive to keep, so I had to sell them. It was either get rid of the kids or the horses, as I could not afford upkeep on all of them. I wish you luck and hope you can find a buyer who will give her a good home.

12. Thanks!
Hey! Catwoman and I want to plan another GA DU meetup for August. It has been quite a while since we've gotten together. Let's plan something for August in either Athens or East Atlanta. I'll post over in the GA forum. And, if you hear from RubyDubyinGA, please tell her we miss her here on DU! (She also got laid off and had a baby to care for.)

8. There's a flag I'd like to make.
It would likely offend just about everyone who saw it, and I would stand with it at that courthouse. I would explain that the right to offend has been clearly established.

Hell, the way things are going in this part of Colorado I might just get the chance, anyway.

For the time being, condolences to the residents of Dodge County GA.
