The industry and its hired politicians had simply been hoping that no more radioactive contamination would be produced than could be relatively easily swept under some kind of carpet - a carpet of media disinformation, for example - and that no direct line of causality could ever be established between any particulat individual case of cancer and any particular 'event' caused by the irresponsibility of that industry and those hired politicians and the political system(s) that can allow such irrationality to take place.
