South Carolina as a blue state. |
|
Several years ago, not long after the Georgia lottery started drawing huge numbers of South Carolinians across the border to bring us their money, South Carolina Democrats (all 9 of them) decided to propose a lottery for their state. The Republicans opposed it because lotteries are gambling and gambling is not "Christian".
Guess what happened? South Carolina went blue and elected a Democratic governor.
Of course, once the lottery issue was settled, the state went back to its old unreconstruced ways.
But this little episode in their history proves to me, that with the right issue, presented in a way that is simple and easy for the electorate to understand, *any* state is ours for the taking.

1. I always encourage progressives to move here, if they're looking to move. |

SC needs all the progressives it can get. :hi:
By the way, I voted against the lottery. I think a lottery gives people false hopes. Even though I could see the logic of, "SC might as well have it; if we don't, our money is going to GA's lottery."
Anyway, the lottery issue passed.

2. Yep, I'm anti-lottery too FWIW. |
|
But I do think that one issue got a Dem elected governor. I think something like that would work on a national level as well.
BTW, despite its horrible politics, I like SC. Charleston is one of the most charming cities I've ever visited. Myrtle Beach is fun. Clemson is a cool little college town. Greenville is the perfect-sized small city and I used to want to live there.
And at least your repug governor is prettier than ours.
Oh, and you guys have the *good* fireworks!

3. As a Georgian I would encourage our Carolina neighbors to spend cautiously in GA if HB87 is enacted. |

HB87 is the "Arizona style immigration law". I suppose the lotto is OK as the proceeds from that go to education.
