Anyone know anything about bionic yarn and its chemical properties?
I just saw an item about it and that it is produced from recycling plastic bottles. WIth all the concern about BPAs, does this mean that clothing and items fashioned from this fabric will also contain BPA? Can BPA be removed from the plastic during whatever process necessary to turn this plastic into fibers? Can BPA be absorbed through the skin or must it be ingested to cause harm?

1. I wouldn't worry about it. Nobody's going to wear
that crap, anyhow. It's just a publicity stunt, really. You'll never see anything in the stores made of this. It's far cheaper to make clothing from synthetic fibers produced in other ways.

3. Well, there are cases where I would buy the stuff if it were available...
Like for knitting or crocheting household items...

small throw rugs, appliance covers, bathroom ensembles (seat cover, TP cover, etc), place mats, small cafe curtains, thing like that.

I guess I'd have to see how soft they could make it before considering it for other uses. Some acrylic yarns can be extraordinarily soft...

5. But the acrylic yarns will be cheaper than this stuff.
You could also knit with polyethylene cord. Same stuff as this. Nasty, stiff, stuff, though. But your rugs would last forever.

2. Soft, flexible plastic -- like that of water bottles -- probably does not have BPA in it.

But you could contact these people and ask them: http://clothesmadefromscrap.com/earth.htm

7. About bionic yarn and PET
Edited on Tue Apr-26-11 11:32 AM by dacied
Bionic yarn is made with fibers derived from recycled plastic
bottles or RPET. The unique thing about Bionic Yarn is that
it's made with an RPET core, and other fibers wrapped around
it. This core is extremely strong, yet it can be wrapped with
organic cotton (or other fibers) giving it a similar feel to
other organic cotton (or other) materials.

Still, your question was about whether this PET contains BPA?
The answer is no. PET does not contain BPA. Bisphenol-A (BPA)
is a compound used to make polycarbonate, a different type of
plastic that's found in some baby bottles, the lining of metal
cans, and reusable sports bottles. PET does not contain BPA
and never has. Some legislators and consumer groups are
concerned there might be a possible connection between BPA in
polycarbonate and possible developmental or reproductive
disorders, although BPA has been extensively studied and ruled
safe by international health authorities. These concerns have
caused some confusion about which plastics contain BPA, but
PET does not contain BPA.

This info came from the following websites if you'd like to
research it more:
