Bacon, high fat diet ends seizures
Brain is tricked into producing new fuel

Posted: 9:50 AM

It’s not a diet that is usually recommended by doctors but children around the country are being prescribed the “keto diet.”

Bacon, butter, cream, sausage and mayonnaise aren’t basic food groups. They are however fats that are tricking the brain into doing away with seizures.

The brain is fueled by glucose sugar but when only fat is ingested, the brain doesn’t get enough glucose. The result of that diet is the body producing a brain fuel called ketones, which have proven to minimize and even eliminate seizures.

ABC News’ Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser reported on the diet on World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer Thursday night. One of the children highlighted in Besser’s report, who previously had 50 seizures per day, is no longer using medication, has stopped using the “keto diet” and does not have seizures anymore. In fact, the report says that a third of all children who have tried the diet have become seizure free.

18. The kids on the keto diet
Are on a more restrictive diet than the typical low carb. Coconut oil can be substituted for cooking oils such as olive oil but the parents still have to keep protein and carbs at minimum levels.

12. Better to just cut out the sugar
Sugar is a toxin

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/magazine/mag-17Sugar-t.html

"Our excessive consumption of sugar is the primary reason that the numbers of obese and diabetic Americans have skyrocketed in the past 30 years. But his argument implies more than that. If Lustig is right, it would mean that sugar is also the likely dietary cause of several other chronic ailments widely considered to be diseases of Western lifestyles — heart disease, hypertension and many common cancers among them."

The amount of sugar that Americans eat is staggering.

23. That's part of it, but too much protien is stressful on the kidneys.
The kids might be on meds as well, likely at the very least have been in the past, and many medicines are filtered by the kidneys. Ketosis only happens when the body doesn't have enough ingested sugar to run normally.

Plus, if it's primarily *good* fats, it will help a developing brain to have an increase in fat in the diet, as the nerve sheaths are made from fatty acids. That's why breastmilk itself has a high fat content.

14. Yet another 1/2 assed article about ketosis
Edited on Fri Apr-22-11 01:37 PM by supernova
Writers like the author of this article latch on to BACON! MAYONNAISE!! etc. as if that's the only way to get yourself into ketosis, the state of burning fats for fuel and that throws off ketones, ergo ketogenic diet.

They completely fail to mention that it's perfectly possible to get most of your fat from plant sources, i.e. plant oils like olive oil, nuts, avocados and stick to lean protein sources.

24. You don't have to lard up.
As some others have mentioned, coconut oil can be used.

http://epilepsyfoundation.ning.com/forum/topics/coconut-oil-and-ketones

http://forums.webmd.com/3/epilepsy-exchange/forum/243

My mom eats it every day for Alzheimer's. I have no problem getting her to eat muffins, cakes, cookies, brownies, or oatmeal made with coconut oil. And they're all vegan, LOL. (Not that she eats vegan the rest of the time.) Her doctor took her off both Alzheimer's meds.

http://www.coconutketones.com/

She did so/so on one Alzheimer's med + coconut oil. I didn't realize how much CO was helping her until I stopped cooking with it for awhile, and she went downhill...so they added another medication. Then she REALLY started getting worse. Much worse. So she was taken off both drugs. Luckily I read an article on coconut oil and Alzheimer's around that time so I knew why she had gotten worse, and that I needed to start using it again. Now she's better than she was pre-medication. Not perfect, mind you. But stable, and not in a constant state of agitation.
