I'm sorry, I just find this whole thing a ridiculous waste of time. This is a GI... he's Government Issue... he broke military law and he is getting what any other GI would get.
That said, I think GI's are often treated horrifically and things need to change. Making this guy a poster boy for that change just ain't going to work. In fact, I think it's counter productive because most people who are outraged by this are blatantly ignoring the fact that a GI broke military law.

2. One of the first things they do in boot camp (from what I'm told) is read you the rules |

He should be punished... no question in my mind. I think there is some question as to the means of punishment being humane, but there should be punishment for this blatant disregard of the rule of military law. He knew there would be consequences. Anyone going through boot camp would know... hell, many of us who did not, but heard about it, know.
