Madison & Milwaukee May 1st Rallies !!!!!

In 1886, Gov. Jeramiah Rusk called out the state militia against Milwaukee workers marching peacefully for the eight-hour day. On orders from the governor, militiamen fired on the crowd, killing seven. The Bayview Tragedy remains the bloodiest labor dispute in Wisconsin history.

It's a sobering reminder that people have given their lives for the rights that we must once again fight for today.

On May 1, we'll have fresh opportunities to stand up and tell the world that we will not be bullied. We are standing firm against Gov. Walker and all who would deny basic rights.

In Milwaukee, we will join forces with tens of thousands of immigrant workers and their families for this year's "Wisconsin Solidarity March for Immigrant and Worker Rights."

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will kick things off with a 1:30 address at Voces de la Frontera at Fifth Street and Washington Street in Milwaukee. At 2 p.m., we will march to Veterans Park for a 3 p.m. rally with President Trumka.

Meanwhile, in Madison, there will be a 1 p.m. May Day Rally for Immigrant Rights at Brittingham Park, 401 West Shore Drive.

Finally -- never to be forgotten -- we will honor the Bayview struggle at 4 p.m. on May 1 at a special ceremony at the Historical Marker at East Russell Avenue and South Superior Street in Milwaukee.
