Iowa GOPers Attempting To Impeach Four Judges Who Overturned Same-Sex Marriage Ban
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/04/iowa_gopers_attempting_to_impeach_four_judges_who.php

Five GOP lawmakers in the Iowa House have introduced four resolutions, each one to impeach one of the four remaining state Supreme Court justices who ruled in favor of same-sex marriage in 2009.

In 2009, the seven Supreme Court judges were unanimous in their decision to reject a law banning same-sex marriage in the state, evoking the ire of social conservative groups like the American Family Association, the National Organization for Marriage, and the Family Research Council. In the lead-up to the 2010 elections, those groups waged a successful campaign to oust three of those judges, who went up for a retention vote at the end of their terms in November.

State Reps. Kim Pearson (R), Tom Shaw (R), Betty De Boef, (R), Dwayne Alons (R), and Glen Massie (R) introduced the resolutions in an attempt to remove the rest of the group, aruguing that the judges "knowingly and intentionally usurped the proper function delegated solely and exclusively to the legislative."

(snip)
The Supreme Court issued a statement in response, saying that "impeachment is not appropriate."

1. Can the supreme court rule those resolutions unconstitutional?
Because it seems to me that hey are trying to impeach these justices for ruling on the constitution in a way they don't like and they are doing it out of spite.

4. No, they can't rule them unconstitutional.
If they could then no judge could ever be impeached and that part of either the federal or state constitution would be null and void. The Iowa House will have to vote on the resolutions and if they pass them it would go to the Iowa Senate for trial.

3. This is Looney-Tunes Steve King (R-IA05) at work along with
his ultra-right wingnut wackazoid BFF Vanderplaats from Sioux City -- the right-wing nuttiness seeps into the western edge of Iowa from somewhere further west, apparently.

Further east in Iowa, we have good Dems like Tom Harkin and Bruce Braley, but District 5 on the west edge keeps returning Steve King to the House. (He's the host whenever Crazy-Eyes Bachmann or Bible Spice from Alaska is in the state.

Iowa was just redistricted from 5 reps to 4, and the Dem running against King will be the Christie Vilsack, the popular wife of an ex-governor, so maybe we can get rid of the biggest embarrassment our lovely state suffers.
