Sex in Space? Russians Say 'Nyet,' NASA Silent
Edited on Sat Apr-23-11 12:43 AM by jaysunb
There have been rumors of unauthorized trysts in space for decades, but none confirmed. A married couple did fly on the shuttle in 1991 and there was at least one couple who was rumored to be having an affair on Earth who also flew together. (For the purposes of this piece, we are ignoring the potential for a homosexual encounter; there has never been an openly gay astronaut, though the law of averages suggest that some are.)

The mechanics of microgravity sex are interesting to imagine. The fact that one is floating around makes things at once more interesting and more challenging. Just think of Newton's law that for every action, there must be an equal and opposite reaction, and one can draw one's own conclusions. Most people who have thought about the practical aspects of such things suggest that the couple will have to be bound together with an elastic band or share a sleeping bag for two.

There is also the aspect of low blood pressure experience by astronauts in micro gravity possibly leading to erectile dysfunction. Fortunately, there are now drugs that can address that particular problem.

3. On a practical matter
if we are ever going to actually send colonies... yes, sex and birth in space, will have to be practical.

Having delivered a kid on good ol' earth or two... it is MESSY... can't think how messy it will be in space.

if it helps, delivering kids (when there are no complications) is like incredible...

6. It'll make face sitting easier.
Other than that, though, I suspect the hype won't live up to the reality.

9. I thought the married couple said they did it.
They said it was hard, basically belts that could be grabbed onto were needed...

To be honest, anything but missionary doesn't sound that hard, provided the fellow could get a good grip on his woman's hips.

10. I'm remembering Al Franken's first book...
...shortly after Newt Gingrich suggested that "honeymoons in space" would be a big thing in the future. Franken tried to describe the potential difficulties of sex in space; virtually every sentence ended with "...and she floats away."
