Gunderson discusses radiation threat to US
Video:

Epidemiologist, Dr. Steven Wing and nuclear engineer, Arnie Gundersen, discuss the consequences of the Fukushima radioactive fallout on Japan, the USA, and the world. What are the long-term health effects? What should the government(s) do to protect citizens?

Pretty down to earth discussion, as always by Arne. Take aways from first listen included some things I was not aware of. Firstly, even though the acute danger of being closer to the source of any radiation, there are other hazards associated with being dosed much smaller amounts at a great distance, as we are here in the US. The amount of radiation released though, still causes the same amounts of cancers, wether exposure is nearer or far away.

We must not ignore other sources of radiation while waiting to learn if these smaller but cumulative deposits of radiation from Fukushima will persist here (even small radiation deposits over a long period of time is damaging), how extensive and how long deposits of low doses of radiation on us here will be. It is not over no matter what we are currently being led to believe by the entities that brought us to this point.

Best not to panic as at this time either, as we do not know for how long we will absorb these apparent currently small doses of radiation, better to put pressure on our government officials to devise a more sane energy policy. There is presently no danger in eating a trout from a stream in Idaho, but the fish higher in the food chain in the Pacific, e.g. salmon and tuna, should be monitored and probably avoided until we know for how long radiation will be dumped into the ocean from Fukushima. We need to put pressure on our government to make those in industry that benefitted from the disaster and continue to proceed without taking worse case scenarios seriously when planning nuclear power plants.

We do know those same fish swimming off Fukushima are the same fish that migrate to west coast fisheries.

I was inspired to post this from that other thread by Generic Other and the issue of radiation monitoring and reporting, etc.

Hope this link enables more to hear this rather sane discussion without sugar coating anything.

1. I knew "there's no threat to health" was bullshit.

Like he says, lower dose means lower risk, but no risk is crazy talk, at least in terms of cancer risk or the risk of having a kid with birth defects.

2. Accumulative effects of radiation is very important
I have been dosed twice already with Windscale, UK in the late 50s, Chenobyl in the 1980s and now #3 Japan's Fukishima. I am tired of the "we get this much every time we have an X-Ray or travel in a plane." These effects from the nuclear power stations are cumulative and can alter genes over a life time. The powers that be NEVER tell the public the true story. We hear of leaks that produce 'screaming' levels of radiation from these plants yet it is all brushed under the carpet.

I think radiation will be the thing that gets the human race in the end.
