Salvation Army official quits after being told not to feed donated food to paid flood-fighters

VALLEY CITY, N.D. — The longtime treasurer of the Salvation Army in Barnes County has quit after being told not to serve free food to contractors who built up the city's dikes in response to near-record Sheyenne River flooding.

Mayor Bob Werkhoven said in a statement that the city needs to focus on flood-fighting and that the food dispute is "a non-issue for both the city and the Salvation Army."

Lori Jury said restaurant owners wanted construction workers' business, leading her superiors to tell her to stop food deliveries, even during hours the restaurants weren't open.

"All I wanted to do was feed some hungry men who are working hard to save our community," Jury, who had been treasurer for 16 years, told the Times-Record newspaper. "I never dreamt it would come to this."

2. A Christian Bible quote I enjoy...
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. (Matthew 6:24)

3. That really doesn't surprise me. The Salvation Army is a
very strange organization IMO. I have a friend who was employed at one of their headquarters as a "civilian" for a little while. She has some bizarre stories about working there.

4. How pathetic.....
"so the local businesses could reap the benefits".

So people are working getting paid to save their town, and all the local businesses can think about is lining their own pockets.

6. A neighbor of mine works part time for the Salvation Army

well not so much a neighbor as someone I often speak to in front of our local supermarket, has told me many horrific stories about the SA. The most vivid was a sweeper, sweeping floors in one of the collection centers found a quarter on the floor, picked it up and naturally put it in his pocket. The "Colonel" if I remember correctly, could have been "major" saw the incident went up to the sweeper and asked why he did not donate or hand over the quarter to the SA. The end of the story is that the "colonel" said to the sweeper on the spot, we won't be needing your services anymore and he was made to leave without pay.
