How did America manage to elect so many Scrooge clones?

Some time after my marriage I realized that my husband did not see himself in literature and media as the "hero", not the "bad guy" either but either but either the victim or bad bad guy's forced accomplice. I was never able to wrap my mind around how you could pick that model for yourself and wondered how prevalent that was, if maybe I was the odd one.
