DUers have you noticed a massive PR offensive
from the 'fracking' folks on both network and cable TV?
What's up with that?

1. There is a fracking moratorium in NYS - we're on the same shale bed
as Pennsylvania, so there is a lot of money to be made if we let the drillers in.

3. It's becoming clear that fracking poisons groundwater.
But they don't want to stop doing it because they get so much natural gas and money using that method.

7. I suspect that the drilling industry is feeling the pressure
from the anti-fracking people, and see that we are gaining ground with public opinion. That cannot be tolerated. They have too much to lose with increased regulation and oversight, or going further, stopping this practice. This is a defensive action.

10. Yep, they have a lot of work to do to get past that.
There is a whole list of points from Gasland that they have compiled and attempted to debunk---they spent a lot of time watching that movie and going point by point. I love that Josh Fox actually acknowledges that debunking list, and posts it on the Gasland website along with his counterpoints, or as he calls it, the de-debunking. Gotta love it.

"Frack" was their word for fuck. And we are certainly getting fracked royally.

17. No, that's just goofy.
Fracking may be fucking up water supplies, but it didn't cause a 9.0 subduction earthquake in the pacific.

18. They will frack just as surely
as they will continue drilling in the gulf, spills be damned. The fossil fuel industry is simply more powerful and has more influence over our government than 'we the people'. Time to wake up and recognize that fact.

When I saw one of those recently, I wondered how the ad would look with video of someone putting a match to their tap water and having it catch fire while the narrator's soothing voice talked about forcing the oil out safely.

25. Yes, definitely.
It is a response to the growing opposition to hydro-fracking. The movie "Gas Land" and grass roots organizations have brought the dangers of fracking to the public's attention. Those invested in the practice are concerned that human/environmental values may restrict their financial interests.

27. It can't. at least
on its own. The media is only based upon profits. Those who pay the most dictate what is on.

The only potential option is for those who advocate human/environmental interests to apply creative tensions, which threaten to lower the numbers of media-consumers who dine on the individual producers' product.

28. The News on KPFA this morning was that the Pacifica affiliate in NY took $10,000
from a B of A related corp. to fund some 'fracking' program. Pacifica has ALWAYS had a "No Corporate Sponsors" policy. The new director did not answer calls for a statement. Looks like the corporations have taken over there too.....
