23. For this to be 'the same' as Iraq...
We would have to have a 'think tank' that wanted this war years ago.
We would have to create some kind of 'special planning office' in the Pentagon to manufacture bullshit intelligence on weapons of mass destruction.
We would have Obama, Biden, and Clinton spewing abject bullshit through the media and at the UN.
We would have to have all the rebels in Libya change their minds, agree their government sucks, but still be against our presence there.
We would have to have the UN change it's mind and issue condemnations against taking unilateral actions.
We would line up the 'no-bid' contracts for all of Obama and Biden's buddies in the oil industry.
AND we would have to take the expenses 'off the books' so it would look cheap... somehow.

And that's just getting warmed up.

This is not the 'same'. That doesn't mean it's "good" or "right", but please, stop acting like the motivations for Libya are the same ones behind Iraq. It takes some profound and deliberate ignorance to think that way.

31. Agree -- and when DU'er don't read the Revolution threads they really
get disconnected from what is going on --

NOT to say that any mission cannot become distorted --

I'd just say that the CIA is there at the invitation and agreement of the rebels --

when it became clear that Gaddafi would destroy every Libyan city

to stay in power -- and his own people.

Again -- I think DU'ers should be looking at this and following it --

because I can certainly see our futures in this revolution!

PS: You're ahead of me on the drones -- I know US wanted to introduce them

but lost track of the threads over the weekend, so don't know what the reaction

is -- but disagree with their use in Pakistan, certainly.

However if using them makes them "douchbags" what does it make Obama and our MIC?

56. You thinks so?
I'd give you 10 to 1 odds that the CIA was there before there was any rebellion.

And it's only coincidence that a top rebel leader lived for 20 years, with no means of support, within a couple miles of Langley. I'm sure.

35. Hey, you left out
We would have to have Congressional Authorization for the Use of Military Force in Libya established months before the bombing began, with debate in both houses of Congress.

I know, it's easy to forget...

"The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.

As Commander-in-Chief, the President does have a duty to protect and defend the United States. In instances of self-defense, the President would be within his constitutional authority to act before advising Congress or seeking its consent. History has shown us time and again, however, that military action is most successful when it is authorized and supported by the Legislative branch. It is always preferable to have the informed consent of Congress prior to any military action." - Barack Obama, 2007

47. Yep, this was very predictable.
It happens every time. Everybody so sagely condemns the last war as illegal and unjustified, but as soon as a new one comes along, their brains fall out. They just believe everything the government has to say about going to war. No reason to ever not trust the government.

Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 09:21 PM by defendandprotect
And, again, I really think it's a problem when people don't get connected

to this in the very beginning -- nor following the revolutions --

But, again, there is always the possibility for even a humanitarian effort

to be distorted and misdirected --

This is a dictator of 42 years -- heavily armed by UK, France, Russia -- and it would have also

been US had not this uprising occurred -- whom Libyans have risen up against.

Had he not been so militarized by our global run runners the people would have been able to

oust him long ago -- TORTURE, for one, has kept him in place -- TORTURE of his own citizens,

even now! Kidnappings -- and all forms of brutality against his own population.

Gaddafi is also using RAPE as a tool of war -- he's brought in 50,000 mercenaries, as well.

Paying them allegedly $2,000 each per day.

The other disturbing aspect of those who can't recognize a true fight for freedom in what

the Tunisians, Egyptians, Libyans, etal have been doing is that I'm amazed that they can't

see similarities to our own position here in the US! We've had decades now of rule by

gangsters -- stolen elections -- and TORTURE has also been introduced here. Every kind of

financial gimmickry has been used by our elected officials to move taxpayer dollars into the

hands of felites!! One day we may be facing down our own MIC for our own freedom!!

37. Tunisians and Egyptians identify themselves as citizens of a single nation state
Libyans don't, and they don't want to be one with anyone except their relatives. That's why Gaddafi has support--from his relatives and their allies in the west. The rebels are non-relatives from the east. At this point, the only way to shut the conflict down may be to divide the country.

38. Yemen, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia
why are we not sending drones to these countries as well? Why are Bahrain and Saudi Arabia still our allies if the only reason we are there is for all of the humanitarian reasons you mentioned? Whenever our government decides to take this country to war they tell us the horror stories, the reasons behind why such and such dictator must be removed while ignoring all of the horror stories of the dictators we still support, it's called manufacturing consent.

46. "Days not weeks" was the scariest thing to me.
I couldn't believe Obama would trot out something so Orwellian. I guess most people don't remember Bush and Rumsfeld chanting "weeks not months" before entering Iraq. I would note that we're still there, despite Obama's "Mission Accomplished" moment.

Tom Tomorrow fucking nails it every time. Although the "mission creep" outcome was pretty predictable right from the beginning. The bold claims that the mission was limited were just intended to grandfather in further action later.

every time. Believing that folks don't remember Bush's words and now Obama's. Or, they are going for the "youth vote" ....the ones too young to notice what Bush said and who voted for Obama but had other issues than endless war. Those are the voters they care about and not anyone else?
