3. No. There's no provision in the U.S. Constitution...
...for recalling Federal elected officials.

6. I guess that it is a good
thing that he is in the minority party in the senate and he's got really bad ideas that aren't going over well in his state.

18. The concept behind recall, is why the US Constitution hold House elections every two years.
In 1787, the British Parliament only held elections every six years, the French Estate General had NOT be called in over 100 years. To avoid both extremes, the two year term was invented. It was to permit rapid turnover in the House, if the people wanted it, while at the same time permitted people elected as members of the house to get to the Federal Capital and back (Trying walking from Maine to Georgia on the Appalachian trail, about the same conditions of most roads in the 1780s, it can be done in about three months, one way, but think in terms of sitting in the Capital and then going back home to campaign, and two years is a quick turnaround).

In many ways, with a two year election cycle you do NOT need a re-call, just wait for the next election and vote him out.

27. SCOTUS ruled term limits for Federal legislators are unconstitutional.
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 09:43 PM by Deep13
I'm sure a state law yanking a Congressman out of office is also unconstitutional.

12. I think state-wide recalls are fine, thanks for speaking for me.
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 02:09 PM by Richardo
And I DID vote to recall Bush in 2004, unfortunately it didn't take.

Imagine a country where the federal elected officials are constantly on the defense, and non-stop campaigning (and of course, unlimited fund-raising from our corporate "citizenry" :eyes: ); where courts are tied up over incessant challenges to recall petitions, where already scarce state and local revenues have to be spent on holding, staffing and judging election after election, where the minority tea partyists have even MORE disproportionate leverage over policy (because those fuckers will vote every time there's a polling station open - not so much with our side, I'm afraid.)

Recall and impeachment should be (and were designed as) nuclear weapons, not Saturday Night Specials. Thanks to the GOP, the bar has been lowered on both, and now they're essentially off-year political referenda on public mandates.

No me gusta.

20. Notice that was a question --- you can tell from the ??????? marks ...
Speak for yourself -- please!!

Cryptic messages don't really work -- they leave us all guessing!!

Think what you're saying could possible work out that way --

Imagine a country where the federal elected officials are constantly on the defense, and non-stop campaigning (and of course, unlimited fund-raising from our corporate "citizenry" ); where courts are tied up over incessant challenges to recall petitions, where already scarce state and local revenues have to be spent on holding, staffing and judging election after election, where the minority tea partyists have even MORE disproportionate leverage over policy (because those fuckers will vote every time there's a polling station open - not so much with our side, I'm afraid.)

However, Wisconsites certainly aren't idiots and they are going to try it -- and I hope they

succeed!

GOP certainly didn't hesitate in using it against Governor Grey --

If it's a tool, it might as well be a tool in liberal/moderate hands as well as in the

hands of the rightwing.

Recall and impeachment should be (and were designed as) nuclear weapons, not Saturday Night Specials. Thanks to the GOP, the bar has been lowered on both, and now they're essentially off-year political referenda on public mandates.

Whatever it was designed to do -- it was certainly distorted by the right wing which has

distorted much of our people's government and democracy.

Think we have to keep discussing RECALL -- as we discuss everything else --

and let's see what happens in Wisconsin!

16. You have to think about the insanity that would ensue if everyone could be recalled.
We can't escape the election cycle as it is. Imagine how compounded that would be if recalls were able to be held right and left. And liberal politicians would be subjected to constant recalls just as much as conservative ones. Nothing would ever get done. Our country would be stuck in one big perpetual election cycle.

21. The issue is that republicans are far more active using such laws than democrats.
If such laws existed widely, a democrat would win a tough election, only to be subject to a recall election months later on frivolous grounds. Democrats in Wisconsin used that state's law correctly, to set up politicians for recall that had violated state disclosure laws and legislative procedure rules that others followed for decades.

And, whether you remember him or not, it'll be up to the voters in the 1st district of Wisconsin as to whether or not he'll be with us after that.

The rest of us can only sit and watch.

24. He's More Useful Around...
As others have said...the fine folks of Janesville, Kenosha and Racine will have their chance to boot him next year.

He gives the Democrats something they desperately need...a boogie man. A face to plaster every evil on...a visual reminder of how the GOTB wants to eliminate Medicare and cut any and every popular program. He should become a verb...such as "the rushpublicans want to Ryanize grandma and put her out on the street" or "thanks to Ryanization, your chance of a comfortable retirement has been ruined"...
