http://thinkprogress.org/2011/04/25/clement-drops-doma/Last week, ThinkProgress reported that the House GOP hired Paul Clement, a former Solicitor General who earns $5 million a year, to defend the unconstitutional Defense of Marriage Act at the sky high rate of $520 per hour — all billed to the American taxpayer. John Boehner’s $5 million man did not stay on the case for long, however. According to a statement released by Clement’s firm:
Today the firm filed a motion to withdraw from its engagement to represent the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group of the House of Representatives on the constitutional issues regarding Section III of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. Last week we worked diligently through the process required for withdrawal.
In reviewing this assignment further, I determined that the process used for vetting this engagement was inadequate. Ultimately I am responsible for any mistakes that occurred and apologize for the challenges this may have created.
