Glenn Beck caller claims she is hoarding food, selling bread for $4.99 a loaf

It appears that Glenn Beck has succeeded in convincing many of his followers that some real trouble is on the horizon for America. In the audio clip to the left, a caller who is a small grocery store owner dramatically tells Beck "it's happening" and that she has begun storing goods and taking gun classes in preparation. The owner also claims that bread prices have gone up about $1.50 over the last year, and that she is now selling a loaf of bread for $4.99 to customers. Beck warns her not to tell others she is storing food for fear that she may become a "target." The caller says she is being careful, and that she has bought a gun and is going to take shooting classes to prepare. However, the statistics for the whole country suggests that she is either price gouging, or living in a region of the country which has an especially hard time accessing bread.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics currently has the average loaf of bread selling for $1.42 in America. Prices have increased over the last year, but nowhere near where the caller describes. Last March bread was selling for $1.37 per loaf, meaning prices have gone up about 5 cents during the past year, not 150 cents as the caller claims. A check of local ads also reveals that one could obtain a good, quality loaf of bread throughout many areas of the country for less than $2.00. The caller is a bit more accurate in describing coffee prices, though a simple search of Amazon.com reveals that a customer could obtain the same product for at least $1.00 less than the price she is selling at her store (free delivery).

It just has some nasty HFCS in it as a preservative. 99% of the product is real flour. $1.79 every day, $1.49 on sale.

I still make my own sometimes. It's about $0.50 per loaf thanks to cheap CostCo flour and yeast. My last bag of yeast lasted over a year in the fridge.

Bread routinely goes for $2.79-3.49 per loaf for whole grain. You can buy food substitute (white bread) for $2 on SALE, but for artisan loaves, five bucks is not unheard of. That being said, what an asshat -- both the price gouging grocery store owner and Beck.

It only takes minutes to put together and no fuss about it. It costs about 80 cents per loaf to make from scratch and you can customize it any way you like.

I'm not being a racist here. In a lot of the Chinatowns and Koreatowns in America, the grocery stores sell bread for $5 per loaf and people buy it because they have nowhere else to go.

The problem with her calling the Glenn Beck show to talk about this is, bread has sold for $5 per loaf in those stores for a very, very long time.

I think I have maybe a buck a loaf total in any bread I bake, and that includes the gas for the vehicle to and from the store and the electricity used to bake it.

What is so hard about baking a decent loaf of bread at home? It really isn't rocket surgery.
