KESENNUMA, Miyagi--Due to deteriorating hygiene caused by power blackouts, suspension of the water supply and poor nutrition from food distributed at evacuation centers, protecting disaster victims' health has become a serious issue in areas devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

"Let me check the bedsores on your back," said Hiroka Wakimoto, a doctor from a Kyoto hospital, who was making a house call to treat a 67-year-old bedridden stroke victim in Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, on Saturday afternoon.

After talking to the patient, Wakimoto washed her bedsores with tap water and applied topical cream.

Sadly, the scope and severity of this disaster has largely escaped most people. They are, instead, focussing their attention on the comparitively minor unfolding problems at the nuclear plants.

This was Hurricane Katrina times a thousand, with an unimaginably severe earthquake thrown in for good measure.

19. Every city for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of miles.

And again, throw in an unimaginably powerful earthquake on top. An earthquake so severe it broke waterlines, killed power, shattered roads, and caused refineries to detonate hundreds of miles away. And all anyone wants to talk about is the nuclear leak, and how it might make some people sick or kill a few of them, and some others wont be able to go home.

As many as thirty or forty-thousand wont go to any home because they are dead. Another million have lost everything they have to live for, their homes and clothes and games and pictures, all their memories, their heritage, the very landmarks they knew down to the freaking rocks they sat on as children are gone forever. It is so bad that Japan is bracing for a second Tsunami, this time not water but suicides. The survivors are stumbling through the freezing mud scrounging for food and blankets, orphaned children are walking miles every day, day after day, searching shelters for anyone they know, snatching a handful of food when they can get it. You think someone is actually counting them?

And THIS is why I am so adamant that the anti-nuclear folks, who have gleefully siezed upon this tragedy to advance their agenda, need to shut the fuck up and stop distracting attention away from this unfolding humanitarian disaster. What they are doing is the equivalent of coming across a woman's body in the weeds, her skirt hiked up and panties hanging off one ankle, and crying in outrage because her Prada handbag is lying in a puddle of mud. I hate that crap in the same way I loathed Bush for using 911 to advance his police state agenda. It was wrong then and it is fucking wrong now, with the difference being that I expect that crap from the douchebags on the right. I expect perspective and intelligence and compassion from MY team.

22. Sometimes it happens that things are not as simple as they appear

America had a hard time managing one flooded city. Japan has hundreds wiped off the map, along with the roads that lead to them. Many of their ships that might have helped are sitting miles inland, the trains that might have helped carry supplies are off the broken rails. Even many airports were wrecked. Nor do they have a massive standing army ready to march into the fray.

Again, America struggled with one city and minimal collateral damage.
