In the world of IT, my best managers have always been women |
|
I don't think its a trend, but who knows? Maybe it is
Every woman I have had as a manager gave me clear instructions, well defined goals and achievable results
As opposed to managers who said "go ahead and do x." And when X is done, I catch all kinds of hell for it
Take that Scott Adams!
Take that Dave Sim!

1. My best managers have always been women, no doubt about it |
|
most of the time the female assistant managers are better than their male bosses.
You know what they say "Do you want to speak to the man in charge or the woman who knows whats going on?"

7. As a female IT person glad to hear it |
|
When I went to school back in early 70's best programming teacher on staff was a female.
And as a female looking for my first IT job I had to look under "male help wanted" in paper. Friggin' unbelievable.

8. My women managers have all been above average. |
|
Both up and down the food chain.
Generally (but not always) better at their ability to separate their ego from the objectives they set out for their staff.
The worst were men.
But I don't think it's fair to generalize.

|
And yes, I have had "evil" women bosses too
But in IT, that wasn't the case

|
and she's the best manager I've ever had. I also work in IT. As a women in IT I've had to deal with allot of silly nonsense from my male supervisors and managers over the years.

17. I have done technical writing in big and small IT software development shops.. |
|
Edited on Tue Apr-26-11 06:41 PM by patrice
The biggest one, run by men, and serving national network ops, used to just freak me out with how haphazard all of the communication was between different types of engineers, many of them from different countries, and between engineers and other types of staff. People wouldn't admit that they didn't know stuff. They'd pretend that their own specialized jargon meant exactly the same things to everyone involved. They'd ballpark stuff and then really sweat it out when it came to migration. It was scary around there!
The smallest shop, with an international warehouse management customer base that they'd been catering to with every customization of it's 25-year-old COBOL heart imaginable, absolutely depended on two women who tested whether and how well the code did what their customers wanted it to do. We were bought out by a web-based app group, for our customer base, almost everyone was laid off and the old code that jumped through every hoop imaginable (and I do know it did because I wrote their reports manuals for them that contained several hundred reports) was retired.
