'Atlas Shrugged' producer: "Critics, you won." He's going "on strike"
Typical teabagger. Playing the victim card to justify his own failure.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/04/atlas-shrugged-producer-critics-you-won-hes-going-on-strike.html#comments

" Twelve days after opening "Atlas Shrugged: Part 1," the producer of the Ayn Rand adaptation said Tuesday that he is reconsidering his plans to make Parts 2 and 3 because of scathing reviews and flagging box office returns for the film.

"Critics, you won," said John Aglialoro, the businessman who spent 18 years and more than $20 million of his own money to make, distribute and market "Atlas Shrugged: Part 1," which covers the first third of Rand's dystopian novel. "I’m having deep second thoughts on why I should do Part 2."

-snip

Though the film has made only $3.1 million so far, Aglialoro said he believes he'll recoup his investment after TV, DVD and other ancillary rights are sold. But he is backing off an earlier strategy to expand "Atlas" to 1,000 screens and reconsidering his plans to start production on a second film this fall.

"Why should I put up all of that money if the critics are coming in like lemmings?" Aglialoro said. "I’ll make my money back and I'll make a profit, but do I wanna go and do two? Maybe I just wanna see my grandkids and go on strike."

4. "Atlas Bombed"... I wonder why he thinks that TV and DVD sales will be high for1/3 of a movie
when the other 2/3 will never exist.

Maybe he should look into doing the other two parts in Anime.

44. I think he's hoping to do well on DVD...
so he can then produces the last two pieces of crap for direct to DVD only.

He has to talk it up so he can try and land a distribution deal. Frankly, outside the tea party, libertarian circles, I honestly don't know who would watch such crap. But then again, even alex jones has his half wit following.

7. just spending money isn't enough asshole. you have to have a good story
and a good cast and a good director. sometimes someone has all those things and it STILL doesn't work. If you have a really good director he might be able to take a bad story and make it watchable. but don't blame the critics. critics pan movies all the time that still make lots of money and people like. but people didn't like your movie... the ones paying $10 to sit in the seat. and it is certainly not their fault either.

17. That's the other funny thing about this...
They had a press showing and purposely excluded the New York Times critic who, in turn, didn't review the movie. He's outraged at the Times for snubbing them. Maybe the Times critic decided that since he wasn't appreciated he'd just "go Galt."

This dude sounds like such an asshole.

40. Not only did the film fail, this release proved that Rand is still
box office poison, her work is just not that popular, her name draws virtually no one to buy a product. First weekend should have drawn the 'movement' people, if there were any.
The market does speak, loudly. Ayn Rand is a brand with no worth, no value, no segment of the population interested enough to keep the product afloat.
It was not just the film, but the 'star name' of Ayn Rand that was so heavily rejected by the marketplace.

43. LOL the classic rantings of a bad filmmaker! "it's all the critics fault!"
Edited on Wed Apr-27-11 08:34 AM by Javaman

So, even though he claims he will make his money back via tv (who would show such a piece of shit?) and DVD (who outside the US would watch this piece of shit?), he still wants to take his blocks and go home. Right.

He got his ass handed to him. period.

He had dreams of fame and fortune. I can bet, this tool also had dreams of grandeur to "out do" Michael Moore. To be the "new voice" leading the charge for a "New America!".

Like so many filmmakers who put fame and fortune above passion and quality, he fell down into the hole of self parody.

He wanted to be that shining beacon of the right wing, but instead, he's a laughing stock.

Filmmaking 101 : 1) Never use your own money if you can avoid it. 2) never go into making a movie without a working script. Always have a working script, even if it's bad. He stated he started production without a script. That is epic fail in filmmaking. 3) if you are going to use unknown actors, make sure they are damn good unknown actors. 4) don't blame anyone else for your failures. He failed at each and everyone of these. Now he's out to blame everyone else for his stupidity.

aka rank amateur with no hope of improving.

At least you had SOMETHING to show for it, and he employed a lot of creative people and such.

I'd like for him to make the other 2 movies. Go completely bankrupt and take a few of his friends with him.

The only downside is that he's probably using 'hollywood accounting' to create a $50 million "loss" to shelter some other business from taxes!

In the meantime, here's a clue Mr. A: Your little cinematic screed was rejected at the box office. By the audience. In spite of it being hyped by the True Believers. Because it wasn't any good. Yes, the critics noticed. More importantly, the audience noticed.

I've read it cover to cover half-a-dozen times, so I know the book.

You could probably do the train crash in the tunnel, Dagny getting it on with Galt after taking of her bare-shoulder dress (one of Rand's obsessions) and maybe an aerial shot of the town in the mountains where they all went. Other than that, it's all a bunch of talky talk, unless you really want a lingering shot of some rotting soybeans.
