Parents: English Teacher Writes Racy Novels
Edited on Wed Apr-27-11 05:46 AM by FLAprogressive
A series of racy romance novels by an author named Judy Mays are a little too racy for some parents in our area, especially now that they have discovered the woman known as Judy Mays is teaching their children.

Parents said Judy Buranich has been an English teacher at Midd West High School for nearly 25 years, but recently they found out she is a published author and writes under the pen name Judy Mays.

Her book is an erotic romance novel and some parents said they are not happy with the book's content.

Parent Wendy Apple has a son in 10th grade at Midd West High School in Middleburg. His English teacher's name is Judy Buranich. Apple said she recently found out that after school Buranich has a second job; she writes erotic romance novels.

"Now my son knows so how is he thinking when he's sitting in her class knowing what she does on the side," Apple said. She added she found all of the information on the internet. Apple said Buranich writes under the pen name Judy Mays.

I really don't see what the big deal is here. It's not like she is promoting the books in class. Leave it to nosy parents to make a big stink over a non-issue and destroy someone's career in the process. They ought to be ashamed.

they don't need to write pulp fiction to make ends meet.

10. It has been a while since I was a teenager, but I think I would have
been more embarassed to have my parents speak out against this than I would knowing my teacher wrote "racy" novels.
Now that I think of it: it was rumored that a teacher that was at the "junior high" where I went had posed for Playboy. All the boys wanted to be in her class. And I bet they paid her more attention than they did to the other teachers.

12. Good grief, she writes erotic werewolf novels
Forget about "erotic" -- this is furry fandom type stuff. (And whoever's writing the copy doesn't know the difference between "whose" and "who's." I guess English teachers aren't what they used to be.)

http://www.judymays.com/wolfies.htm

For uncounted years, Bleddyn has waited for the right woman to purge the lust to kill from his blood. Now he's found her. Reporter Meredythe Welsh is hot on the trail of a serial killer, one who uses a wolf or wolfdog to kill his victims, and the trail leads directly to Dr. Bleddyn Glyndwr, a man who both fascinates and tantalizes her. As the full moon waxes, a blizzard strands Meredythe at his estate where she learns his dark secret - and experiences the passionate love of a werewolf. But, Slade, Bleddyn’s arch enemy, is nearby watching and waiting -- waiting to take the woman who's blood, he believes, will grant him eternal life.

Deep in the Central American jungles beings roamed freely -- half human, half cat. For three such cats, a jaguar, a puma, and an ocelot, life is easy and uncomplicated -- until humans cross their paths -- specific humans, humans who will need their help, their protection, their love.

Balam, Karak, and Raina must choose between the uncomplicated life denizens of the jungle lead or a life with a human with all its complications.

Sanika, Mireya, and Hans must also make a choice, one that is far harder and more uncertain. Can each of them find it in themselves to love a being that is more than human, that is half animal?

25. And your point?
I might add that it's pretty certain Judy Mays didn't write the website copy.

So, again: What's your point? And how many books have you published?

29. Authors tend to be finicky about the ad copy for their books
With major publishers they don't always have much of a say, but they generally keep an eye on how their work is presented whenever they can. And since that site was one of the top results when I googled on "Judy Mays," you'd think she'd be aware of it and would have dropped them a friendly email.

But my larger point was that the stuff she's writing appears to be about half a step above fan fiction. I'm not sure what to make of that, but it does put a different spin on the situation than the term "racy novels" tends to imply.

If you're not aware of furry fandom, you might read the Wikipedia article -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom -- for an indication of why it's considered controversial.

32. I am an author
Please don't tell me I don't know what happens in the marketplace, especially in the romance industry.

MOST authors have little to no control over what the publisher puts on the website or even the publicity of their work, unless they're Nora Roberts. One of my girlfriends writes for the largest romance publishing house in the world. The exact same cover photo on her book was used on another book, without her permission, and in the same month her book appeared in print.

Considering the fact that Judy Mays didn't wake up yesterday morning thinking her work was about to be savaged on the Internet by those who have nothing better to do, I'm sure whatever correcting needs to happen on the site will be happening at Ellora's Cave offices as soon as their webmaster is alerted.

I really don't care what your impression of Judy Mays' work is, and I'll bet she doesn't, either. The point is, she should be able to write what she likes. Ellora's Cave is a smaller publisher, but they're not publishing every manuscript that comes in the door. Mays is writing erotic paranormal, which is a subgenre of romance. I don't write it. I don't read it. I am not about to tell her what she can or cannot write. To infer that someone who writes paranormals is a "furry" is ridiculous.

Sounds cool and if done well enough could bring in some much-needed cash.

Thank you, Wendy Apple! (and wouldn't that make a great name for a character in an erotic story?)

Edited on Wed Apr-27-11 12:34 PM by ellenfl
this teacher . . . any more than they would lust after the mothers shown in that video. they have too much visual stimulation from the media of 16yo 'hotties' to lust after middle-aged women.

i bet the sale of those books goes through the ceiling.

"Now my son knows so how is he thinking when he's sitting in her class knowing what she does on the side," Apple said.

Where do these people come from? I bet the mother is also against birth control, because of course her son isn't having sex. LOL!

20. So the teacher can demonstrate that what she teaches can be turned into cash
Being able to write is relevant to making money?????
what a concept.
whatever they type of book she creates, learning from a published author would be way cool.

I would hope that in addition to teaching english she is also teaching creative writting.

This kind of thing makes me think that parents should be banned from being around children (unless they're adoptive or foster parents). Because if they have children, they must have HAD SEX. How can children be around them all the time thinking about what they did?

24. I'm a romance author
MOST of those writing in this genre (roughly 98% women,) write under a pen name for the reasons Judy Buranich is currently dealing with. I am glad that those attacking Mrs. Buranich are being shown for exactly what they are - a bunch of ill-educated busybodies. Mrs. Buranich has been teaching for 25 years in that district. The former and current students responding to the article have all said they knew she was an author, but she has never mentioned her books (or the subject matter) in the classroom.

I do not write erotica. At the same time, I will defend those who do. It is their business what they do in their private lives, and what they choose to write about. They are not hurting anyone. Plus, considering the fact it takes a hell of a lot of talent to get published in the first place, they should be congratulated.

27. I dunno...maybe the kids oughta concentrate
on the subject matter at hand and quit allowing themselves to be distracted by nonessential bullshit.

In my senior year of high school, I had an English teacher who was reputed to be an alcoholic. I somehow NEVER thought about when diagramming the sentence, "So live, that when thy summons comes to join..."

She was a helluva of a teacher.

until Wendy Apple (LOL! Love the name!) said something about it? And why the hell does it matter what the teacher writes and publishes (UNDER A PEN NAME NO LESS) during her off-time- as long as it's legal? Some people in this country apparently have WAY too much free time on their hands and they need to figure out other ways to scratch that "busybody" itch they seem to have. GAWD, I HATE people who do things like this! :banghead:
